In Germany, we remember the term the NZIs used for what Trump is currently doing with the media: Gleichschaltung; bringing the media in line with party stance and narrative, eliminating all dissenting voices. Nothing of this is new, and it sends an unmistakable signal. The parallels are obvious.

I’ve been watching John Oliver for years now, and I want to be clear—this decline in the U.S. wasn’t a sudden slide from democracy. You were warned at every step. As someone who grew up in a third-world country, it’s surreal to see the political tactics I once saw back home now mirrored in a nation that’s supposed to represent the pinnacle of modern society. And yet, it’s not at all surprising.
