Notable Facts: Only a handful of federal judges have ever been impeached and removed. This process is deliberately difficult to protect judicial independence from political pressure. What About State Judges? In contrast, state judges can sometimes be: Elected or retained by voters in elections, depending on the state. Recalled by voters in some states via a ballot initiative. Disciplined or removed by a state judicial commission or legislature. So, while the American people don't have direct power to remove federal judges, they may have more say at the state level, depending on the laws of their state.
