Thank you for your enthusiasm. I'm a retired 9th grade English teacher who managed to insert "Reaper Man" into my District's curriculum book/author pool. Keep the faith. Thank you.
I LOVE Leonard of Quirm glad he gets a shout out "they just want to go to war with him and it makes him sad" 😂 Why don't they just enjoy the science ☹
I love when Lady Margolotta punches the air when she hears that Vimes is on his way....😁
Made it this far through the watch books now. Am currently about halfway through “Night Watch” with “Thud” on the next to read list. The tone of this book I found to be a bit of a weird shift but I kind of liked it. Some of Vimes moments in this book were so epic. He’s such a badass! Thanks for introducing me to discworld. I have just ordered the first 3 death books, first 2 witch books, and the 3 moist von lipwig books so that I can continue the madness lol. Thanks for the awesome review Allan. Do you have any plans to continue reviews for the last 2 watch books?
What a great commentary, thank you! You bring out the book's strengths wonderfully. I always get impatient at the boys' adventure aspects of T.P. books, including final one-on-one fisticuff-fighting, which - in this case - stopped me appreciating, e.g., the world of Lore (vaguely East European vampire and werewolf movies!) vs. Civilization. I am very grateful!
It's been a while but I think clacks were actually introduced in this book, they were prominently featured in Going Postal but that's way after the Fifth Elephant.
I loved the Igors!! I would have been sad if you forgot to mention them. I can't wait to see them in Ankh-Morpork.
Wasn't this the one where the clacks were introduced? GNU Terry Pratchett.
The Igors were partly based on Marty Feldmans portrayal of Igor in 'Young Frankenstein' with a little of 'the Hangman' in 'Blazing Saddles' thrown into the mix, with his Karloffian lisp. Well Igor IS a man of Many Parts... "Ah, Eegor..." "Eyegor. It's pronounced 'Eye-gor." Well, I'll just call you Eegor, it's easier. " "Alright, Frodo-rick..."
Your intros are 🔥
Not your intention at all, but I actually teared up 8:13 when you read the Sybil passage and broke it down. I LOVE their relationship, how they compliment each other, how they support each other's dreams and how realistic and healthy it is.
6:30mins in and I am loving the Syble and Vimes relationship chat 😍 they are fantastic and are definitely at my fantasy dinner party. Cannot recall much of this book, but you see have me hyped to re-read the watch books next yr.
I always remember the final words that the dwarven king says to Vimes while giving him giant axe as a parting gift. Whatever will happen to that axe in the future, no matter how little of the original parts should it has left - it will still be the same axe that was given to him. That's such a wise point of view. Also I always thought that the main antagonist gives off strong Nazi vibes, with all his ideology, uniforms, flags, troops etc. All in all, it was a reallly good review. Looking forward to Night Watch. That one is going to be big.
I’m taking a break from The Wheel of Time to jump back into Discworld with The Fifth Elephant. From page one, it’s like reminiscing with an old friend. Sybill is indeed, for me, the most likeable and loveable character in Discworld, can’t wait to get to her parts in the book. I’ve also heard from some Discworld fans that this is their favorite Discworld book. It could very well be because Pratchett toned down the slapstick in order to present himself more fully as an author who can deal depict the concrete and the serious, the socially and psychologically visceral. In any case, can’t wait to find out!
This review was so good. I love your Discworld reviews. I didn't know that this was only 2 books away from where I'm at with the City Watch - I thought you all were way ahead of me. Anyways ... Carrot - is not good?!?! What?! I love Cybil and her dragons. Can't wait to get to this book.
We discussed recently that my feelings on this book are very mixed. Parts I enjoyed very much (Vimes at peak Vimesness, Colon being a hilarious weirdo), but mostly get to the point. What I really wanted to stem from this book was a dedicated Sybil book because she’s a DELIGHT, particularly given her background. sadly we will never get that.
Hi Allen, I've been cherry picking (haha, I didn't even notice what I did there until I re-read this) through your older uploads, and in watching this one, need to share the love for Sybil. She is, to my mind, the most perfect foil for Sam. She's feminine enough to appreciate Sam's protective nature, and, has a backbone of steel for when there's no time to wait for rescue, and she's got to get shit done on her own. I love that as a couple they've developed 'codes' for social situations, and they show clearly that they have strong appreciation for each others gifts - Sam so very enjoyed 'firing' Sybil, in full Duchess mode, at the diplomatic Dwarfs, and Sybil is happy to occupy them, well aware she's giving Sam time to go and 'detector'. I loved the development we got for the Igors too (my favourite Igor is in Making Money). Theirs is a truly philanthropic culture, and I always think Sir Terry uses them as a means to promote medical science, and the need for a community solely focused on scientific breakthrough. Cheers :)
