Nice overview! This video really helped me figure out which one is my best choice for the time being.
I read many comments saying that GNOME is not customizable enough compared to KDE. In reality, GNOME only needs two simple extensions: "Just Perfection" and "Open Bar." Two extensions that do everything.
This is what I've been using for a bit and like it. I never got that attached to Gnome, so Fedora KDE is probably what I'll be sticking with for my daily driver.
Main reason im moving away from windows is because of account integration. I dont want my OS to have an account for some reason.
I used KDE with version 5 for three years, but when version 6 was released, many things changed for the worse: applications kept crashing, especially kwin, which was unmanageable. Now I've been using GNOME for 8 months, and I've never had any issues. I could say that it will be hard to make me switch DEs in the coming years.
I don't DO "online account" CRAP--- that's just ASKING to get hacked- especially now with AI able to impersonate YOU and do whatever YOU don't want it doing..
You mentioned a GIGANT roadblock , if dependant on calendar
KDE is definitely ahead in a lot of areas like VRR and HDR support. Until recently Gnome didn't have VRR support. That's why I picked it and I personally prefer it over Gnome.
You can easily fix the mounting issue with autofs and krb5. It is not as complex as you think it would be. I was able to use it to automount every FreeIPA users home directory on workstation logon from a centralised server.
Elementary OS 8 SHOULD already be out but its not ready yet. I like the Pantheon desktop as it runs quite light weight
KDE runs kinda good nowadays with wayland and games... but yeah, everything else, there is always something that EFFS around and has issues. After every bigger update there is always something not working as before. basically really every time over the last 2 years I tried to use KDE over GNOME as main DE. KDE has lots of stuff that is cool and that I miss in GNOME, for sure. But I almost never have any big issues when using GNOME wayland over the last years. Maybe because their approach is simpler than KDE. I dont know. Ressource usage of the DE doesnt matter to me with todays hardware we use for gaming etc. it doesnt make any difference at the end of the day outside of some benchmark numbers maybe. The workflow and smoothness in GNOME is still unmatched. KDE is way too much Windows like. And guess what, I dont like Windows. So, there is that.
The main reason I don't like Gnome is ironically all of that integration. It eats into system resources and makes it harder to swap out components. It is for this reason I don't judge one's choice of desktop to nearly the same degree as I do their choice of distro!
I prefer gnome but I can see the desire for kde in a corporate workstation as it functions similar to another well known desktop.
Funny, here I was thinking the exact opposite before watching the video, that Gnome has some cool stuff but is not quite ready to replace KDE :P There are just too many things that Gnome doesnt do without having to rely on 3rd party extensions, which as others have mentioned here can be a major pain as some of them just dont work, or if they do work they may break after an update to Gnome etc.
Plasma 6 is definitely the most modern GUI I've seen. I recommend everyone give it a try. However, I think Plasma is more geared towards personal machines rather than enterprise hardware. As for the situation with fedora - it's just a statement of fact. Anyone who was interested understood that fedora's Plasma spin is in a special position and the community puts much more effort into it than into other spins. Here it was simply clearly stated.
Thanks
After multiple hops among distros, KDE is definitely becoming the most advanced Linux DE. I think it is easier to use because of its Windows "familiarity". The settings panel can be intimidating for newcomers because of its shear capabilities but a bit similar to the Windows one. The Dolphin file manager is the best too. Personally I am on Manjaro KDE become it is a rolling release with all the latest Linux developments and kernels. Also there is nothing like the AUR to easily get almost every Linux software under the sun without searching the web. Customizing KDE is such a breeze compared to GNOME. A few clics and you get an awesome looking desktop unbeatable by Gnome. Plasma is now distancing away from the other UI much faster (now 6.3.4) and gaining tremendously in popularity. There is a reason why the Steam Deck is based on KDE. It is simply more powerfully and customizable.
I found KDE a better expirience like you stated. It does have some quirks the lack of integration. But it was a smoother transition from Windows to KDE. I tried linux mint but it didn't feel right. I Tried Gnome and felt ok with the dock for a task bar. But KDE just works for me. Also my steam has it. I have tried PopOS, Voyager, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, KDE Neon, Elementary OS, and chose Kubuntu. The stability of Ubuntu with KDE environment. I did the live testing of Fedora KDE and out of hte box it was gorgeous.
Gnome can't get their act together, and they fucking care about eye candy and stupid stuff rather than usability!
