I remember back in 1940 Twitter blew up with people pissed about the Citgo sign
It is impressive that there's been a Citgo sign there since 1940. They'll miss seeing the sign, but they'll get over it.
I live in Boston - we'll get over losing the Citgo sign. We just hate change. No one wanted the Green Monster seats, either, until they were up for purchase
I was stationed in Boston for 7 years. Had a lot of fun at Fenway. Not sure what it’s like now, but back then when they were still in their championship drought, you could get a general admission ticket for $3 with a military ID, and sit anywhere there was an empty seat. Good times
Every mlb team wants a “Atlanta Battery”
As someone from Boston I’m so sick of this story already. One quick search shows plans have been underway for over a month to move the sign accordingly so it will still be visible from the ballpark
totally agree with everything you said. Keep the Fenway experience as close to how it has been.
Just some additional details about the Citgo sign as a New Englander. Massachusetts/Boston has named it a historical landmark and purchased the sign due to its relationship to Fenway Park. The sign no longer has any connection to Citgo the company, and the Citgo Service Station that the sign was originally built to advertise is LONG gone and has been for like 50+yrs now. Massachusetts resident tax dollars now fund the maintenance and upgrades of the sign and the people have made it clear through several legal battles and protests over the past 75 years that it is one of the most important symbols of Boston and Massachusetts as a whole.
Some say that Wrigley Field got ‘Fenwayed’ during its restoration. Now Fenway is adding rooftop seats and taking down outfield signs? It sounds like Fenway is getting ‘Wrigleyed’.
As a Bostonian, it will take years for that project to be completed even if approved and it's going to be in the $3 billion to get it completed. We still cannot fix issues with the roads, subways, etc even with all the construction.
I'm in Boston. To your first takeaway...John Henry is a nudnik and could not be bothered for a split second about what the fans want so he's going to move forward with the building as long as there is enough space for him to make even more money. And look...I get it..."what do you mean John Henry doesn't care...since 2000 you guys have won FOUR titles!" Fine, but in the weeds you have the real conversation of a guy that is just invested in real estate, not baseball so much. Not anymore. I wish he'd sell the team. The Citgo sign isn't an ad to us. It's an intrinsic part of the Fenway experience. I've seen it my entire life and my old man who was only a baseball fan because I got into it always told us about that damn sign. He knew. Everyone knows. It's part of Fenway. To block it WOULD be criminal.
Humans love iconography. And the Citgo sign is much a part of the iconography of Fenway Park as the Green Monster. So that's why even non-Bostonians would hate to see Fenway Park lose that part of its identity.
I recall driving from Maine back to Boston and a sigh of relief when you spotted that signage light up. Leave the light on and I'll be home soon. The neon lights went bad during the energy conservation period. Like messing with the home thermostats to do your share in saving for the good of the Country. Then the sign was saved from destruction when it was declared an Historical Landmark. Keep the lights on!
Hey my friend Always love your topics. Very informative. Take care.
Every one of those individuals complaining about that are Nimby‘s. These are the same people that fight affordable housing , and want to be able to drive to every single place on the planet regardless of who it hurts.
I like these type of videos. No one else in media is doing this. This stuff matters to fans
This sounds like the Wrigley fooftops debate all over again.
The way you breakdown these issues in your videos is next level! Great content as always Brodie
In an alternate universe the Citgo sign is a Sinclair sign.
