Microsoft lost in court against SUN Microsystems about Visual J++ where Microsoft was trying to make Java run "better" on Windows, but which others saw as their usual tactic of copying, extending, then snuffing out the competition. Microsoft announced C# perhaps a month after they lost in court. I imagine it's knock-off of Java but with Microsoft characteristics. 😋 They added .NET as well.
