You aren't suppose to have distractions on other monitors. The point is to have your entire development workflow on all monitors so everything is always in the same place. Central monitor: Your code Another monitor: terminal for running/debugging. That alone, you can keep the error messages and debug output open while you scroll your code, glancing between. 3rd monitor: Depends on project, but could be an API reference, a database connection, a doc page. Something you refer to again, while coding. Maybe you run some code, then check the db to see what's been updated, then update the code, recheck the db. Not needed to keep switching between windows actually keeps your mind more focused/engaged. So the key is having everything in a SET position, so you don't have to "find" windows and use brain power. They are NOT for doing multiple things at once. When you finish coding, and you're just reading a webpage, you have that in your centre monitor. Another example is you might have a spreadsheet open, and a client email, and you're working in the spreadsheet based on what's in the client email. In no world would you have youtube open on your other monitor. Why oh why lol. No social media, no distractions, no crap. Work. Do one thing at a time. If you want to watch a youtube video, put it on the center monitor and focus on it. Or have it on a left monitor, and have a note taking app in the center where you're taking notes.
Jepi: Finally! No more distractions. cat: I got this.
Dude ... your video editing etc. is amazing! 10/10. Always nice to see creative software devs
Love the vibe and the content! Super cool how the video isn’t just about fancy monitors, but about staying focused and cutting out distractions that’s what really matters.
I used dual monitors for 25+ years. A year ago, I switched to a single large ultrawide monitor, and I've never been happier. Especially with the way that macOS handles full-screen apps.
42 Inch LG OLED C3 user here. Love it and will not go back to anything less than 32 inches.
nice commercial xD
I work the same way as you, multiple monitors are distracting. AltTab is definitely a must on Mac!
Exactly. I went from 1 to 2. From 2 to 3. From 3 to 3+TV. From 3+TV to 1 ultrawide to 1 portrait. And now I'm back to 1. The important factor is - do you touch type. Yes. It is important to eliminate the friction. Because if you don't touch type, switching the applications back and forth will be kind of pain which will whisper you - "get another screen". I use fancy tiling window manager... This gives me ability to switch the "screens" instantly. Without even thinking. And I have fancy custom keyboard with special modifications which gives me ability to switch "screens" without even lifting a finger. And at the end of the day... i have tremendously increased focus. At any given time I am working and fully focused on the task right in front of me. This is huge. Really. When there is too much noise around... it just makes false sense, that you are so productive. Because so much is happening around you. But in fact... you are just wasting your energy and time on paying attention to all that noise around you. Currently I am considering to ditch my headphones. For years I were sitting days and days in my headphones. I feel like they had grown into my head. :D... But now I am thinking... that working in silence might be the best for me. Music is nice... but... there is something bad in it. Not yet quite sure, what exactly.
one more reason to keep 2, during work you want to share your screen with others but still sometimes you want to check something on a side (i know that you can share window now screen but still)
What is the difference in a monitor that has 2 windows open side by side and 2 monitors with one window open on each?
I have 3 monitors: laptop monitor for Teams, landscape 24 inches for browser, portrait 24 inches for code. I absolutely adore this setup and coding on a vertical monitor makes all the difference to me
Idk how you managed to make such a subjective topic into a 10 minute video, that’s some talent
You put away another screen where YouTube was running and started YouTube side by side on the same screen 4:30. Why do you think it’s different?
When I bought a 28" 4K monitor I found myself just using one monitor too. With 4 times the pixel real estate of my 1080p I didn't need the laptop display. Then when I bought a new laptop, high resolution display was a priority in my choice of machine. Using it with multiple workspaces is a huge plus in helping you focus too. Totally agree with all your points.
I just came to this conclusion for my 2025 setup as well! Less distractions, no more head turning and I have an empty desk again. I think everyone forgets about the multi-desktop feature bc it launched the same time two monitor setups became affordable. Thanks for the insights Jepi
I’m writing code for 35+ years and guess what - I use single monitor setup after trying virtually every imaginable configuration and often more than once 😉 Few reasons: value of desktop real estate versus added value of extra monitors - never worked in favour of multi-monitor setup for me… I stopped doing multitasking long time ago and one monitor for single task is enough… but ability to easy switch between screens/workspaces is essential - so, I mostly work in Linux just because of that… quality of the monitor matters of course but right balance between screen size and resolution is even more important… my rule is 27” -> 1440p, 32” -> 4K (my personal preference is 27”). So, you are on the right track 🙂
Brother, ur color grading and shot choice is amazing. Clearly uve been binging alot of cinematography videos!
I got used to a single display setup a while back when an employer was willing to provide us with LG's 5K monitor for our Macs, but we could only have one because they were $1500 each. I didn't like having the laptop display open off to the side as I found it too small to use regularly, so I got used to just the one (super nice) monitor and macOS' virtual desktop feature as you noted. Now, even on my personal desktop I only want a single display. The setup is just so much easier, and you note you can stay focused on your desired task a lot easier. Plus I never had to worry about sharing the wrong monitor while on a video call and then trying to figure out how to share the right one. 😂
