I wholeheartedly believe all of these features add soul to your game. The npcs randomly wearing outfits you buy is the kind of stuff that sticks with players. You have a lot to be proud of!
I'm personally very glad you added the drawing canvases! One of my favorite moments was being jumpscared by seeing a character I drew show up staring at me from behind a wall.
All of these little things that were a "waste of time" are what makes your game so special and loved by many!
The single keyboard for two players is actually really important for other reasons; mapping weird controllers. Tons of people use weird controllers with questionable support and people with disabilities sometimes use custom controllers made specifially for them. The ability to use somethkng like JoytoKey to map these inputs to keyboard is a major feature. Very recently me and my sister were playjng an indie fighting game that was having trouble recognizing my fight sticks. I booted up joytokey, mapped all the buttons to some key presses, and then mapped those key presses in game back to what they should be and I now had two perfectly functional fight sticks that didn't interfere with each other.
5:33 love the irony in the fact that your working on SUPER DEBT to avoid SUPER DEBT
ngl out of all clearly overscoped busywork-full yt games I've yet seen, this one easily looks the most fun. just feels like genuine polish and attention to detail rather than having a lack of clear direction
All this stuff is not wasted time, itâs charm and soul. The vibes are immaculate, and with all the customization and silly fun to be had, it truly makes a game special. Like literally watching this I went from âwell itâs just another indie platformerâ to âyeah Iâll totally buy this because itâs full to the brim with fun (what a concept) and love from the dev!â
Bro keyboard sharing is the GOAT, i love it. Games nowadays make it so difficult to play couch coop, some games require you to have 2 controllers to play instead of keyboard + controller for 2 players, it's cringe
I realized that the NPCs could use some cosmetics, and I also spent some time in the drawing minigame. I wasn't expecting to see my "masterpieces" show up randomly in the levelsâthat was a fun surprise! For me, these features aren't a waste of time; they add a lot of charm to the game. I played Garbanzo Quest (100% completion!) last winter, and the level of polish really made me think it was a well-known indie title. It's a shame it wasnât a financial success đ
Yo, that's me!
Wanted to let you know how much my partner and I have been loving Garbanzo Quest! We saw your videos about its development which were legitimately super inspiring to us, and part of where we got the motivation to pursue our own first major game project. The game itself is so fun and we completely appreciate every little detail you put in. The amount of time we spent confused about why characters changed colors, eventually just to accept "I guess that's just a thing they do in this world like I guess that would make sense" (Thanks for the real answer btw), The amount of fun we have trying to overcome certain challenges (Love how difficult this game gets), and especially the little yellow guy who doesn't like food (They very consistently use yellow dye since I think they're supposed to be green) who has become one of our favorite characters in anything recently, they're so silly. It's such a special game to us, and we're super pumped to see what's coming next from you!
0:24 to be fair, stuff like this may not push the needle for your current game being financially successful. But for future games? Little details like this stick with players and I think it does push the needle in terms of player trust and loyalty to anything you make in the future !
It's crazy that this guy has to justify decisions that were commonplace back in the 80s through early 00s era of gaming. And not too coincidentally, a lot of those choices were what made that era so great. Devs went the "extra mile" all the time, never settle for less than your best work. Seeing people still add in all the little touches is very endearing and nice to see.
I specifically found your game while searching for couch co-op to play with my partner and I'll never forget the absolute blast we had playing through everything we could over the course of a couple days. We also spend so long drawing together on the canvas and we're so shocked to see our silly bean art in the levels!
GOAT STATUS FOR MAKING EVERYTHING COLORBLIND ACCESSIBLE
Nah adding a level editor ia definitely not wasted time, I can't stress enough how much I love editors in games it's one of my favorite things in life
Thank you for adding 2p coop to garbanzo, it's the reason I bought it. The secondary reason was that it was an indie platformer that reminded me of Super Mario World.
Oh my gosh this game is such a hidden gem! I love everything about it and your editing/video style, and immediately purchased it after watching this video! Keep up the great work!!
Being an artist means wasting time on impractical bullsh*t that most people don't care about and/or won't notice. Kudos on Garbanzo Quest, and I hope Super Debt keeps you out of super debt (I thought that joke up all by myself, don't check the comments).
