When I was in High School, (graduated in 1972), young girls were not allowed to take wood shop. I wanted so desperately to learn how to use tools because I started sewing at 6 years from the help of my grandmother. Tools and building things just seemed like the next step...however it wasn't until I purchase my first house, a 1940 beauty that my father for Christmas gave me a battery operated drill. He just thought that I should just get married and let the man of the house do the construction. Well, I can tell you that my garage is the envy of all the fellows in the neighborhood because of my wood shop! I finally achieved my dreams. I still wear heel shoes and get dressed up..but I love my tools. I have subscribed to your channel because I am really impressed with your skills, especially the way you can construct a design in your head and accomplish the goal. Trust me, very few women seem to have this ability, let alone desire. So I congratulate you on your beautiful design and craftmanship. I have subscribed to your channel and I can't wait for the next video! Thank you for posting!!
Hey, I do renovation for a living, and I just wanted to say respect Renee! The way you put together and carried the IKEA furniture all by yourself, the clever layout and cutting of the pieces, the masking of the joints, the choice of colors, and the video as a whole. Cool work! There is just one thing I might add. “Airtight” systems like this can promote mold on the wall behind them, especially on cold, uninsulated walls to the outside. Little vents that allow airflow to prevent humidity from building up are good way to remedy that.
It’s the most beautiful custom IKEA project that I’ve ever seen! Absolutely Stunning!
I mean, come on! I watched you do it, so I know you did, but it's still pretty unbelievable! I'm in my 60's, but I still wanna be you when I grow up!!
Inspiring. I’m not sure most people have your level of skill, but you made it look approachable. The results are truly stunning!!!
Awesome job. Inspiring. As much as I hate to be "that guy", you might want to cut some breather holes between the lidded box at 9:45 and (maybe) the base cabinets to its left. I used to make furniture and we didn't realize kids were dying in "blanket chests" because they would climb in and use them as hiding spots or forts. Then they'd fall asleep (CO2 buildup). Around the early 2000s word got out and we changed. Then the feds stepped in and made it law. So an option is chop a hole into your base area, and over there maybe a subtle grate/vent that allows air exchange. It needs to be lower than the head of a kid in the box (CO2 is heavier than O2). I appreciate the build of materials list, to see what Ikea cabinets you used.
way lower than expected! Amazing build, you don't give yourself enough credit for all these straight edges on these wonky wobbly walls. you go girl!
Looks amazing! 2k for materials is fantastic! Real question- how long did this take? How many active working hours (measuring, planning, cutting, assembly, and finish work) and how long for everything to dry? Material cost is one thing, gotta know the labor element to understand pros and cons of the diy vs. pro custom. Of course if you like doing this yourself and/or don't have the money to pay someone that is a huge factor. I feel like a lot of people see this and say well why would this cost anything more then to have done for them.
As a cabinetmaker joiner I’m impressed that you took on such a big job. You did well. But you made a lot of work for yourself and I’d encourage you to be adventurous next time and make your own from scratch as you’ll save money, get a far better finish and it won’t take any longer than all of the saving and modifications you had to make.
This was truly a treat to watch. As someone who was interested in carpentry but didn’t know where to start, I admire seeing women create these awesome masterpieces! Beautiful job!
I recently bought Ikea wardrobe, I wish i was as clever & young as you, YOU GO GIRL. Your labor is at least $2500, but absolutely wonderful.
The labor of this is priceless ❤
Brilliant, exceptional, creative, unique, etc. We used an Ikea kitchen for a very small Paris apartment. After trying the Ikea design software, I hired an Ikea kitchen designer. The result was a complete parts list, the contractor, who had built numerous Ikea kitchens in Paris apartments, picked up the package and installed a beautiful, easy to use "galley" kitchen. You make us look lazy. I say, Bravo to you. Excellent.
Pretty cool to discover there used to be a door connecting the 2 rooms. I actually rented a house in Savannah, that had a connecting door between the 2 bedrooms. It was quirky but understood it was part of the character of the house, 1920's. Wow - the wall unit is beyond beautiful and so functional. It actually looks like it's original to the house. You sure did a lot of work to get it completed. Yes, it was more than I thought, but I have no idea what Ikea units costs. Love all the details and the window seat is a nice bonus! Nicely done!
Your work is spectacular! I can’t believe your attention to detail. I hope you are as proud of your accomplishments as I am of your work. You are a BEAST. Go women woodworkers!
The attention to detail is exceptional and it really shows. Phenomenal job.
I’ve never done and DIY’s this significant, but I wish I could. I’m all for saving money while upgrading the look. You saved so much money installing these IKEA pieces. Kudos to you. I’m sure your parents appreciate all the hard work
I just have to say, you did an amazing job. I love built-ins. They give so much character. I also love that you aren't afraid of color. ❤
💎 Renee, you are a real gem! Everyone I’ve ever watched create the closet of dreams using simply Ikea billy bookcases has made the process look deceptively simple - just take measurements and pay the bill. Leave it to an honest woman (that’s you) to give us the nitty-gritty details. I am so glad I clicked on your video to find out the costs because I learned so much more. Thank you for the education! And by the way, your tenacity and talent is incredible!
