After three years police academy you become a 'basic cop'. Once on the job you will be with an experienced cop, because Dutch police operate with two in a car. And there is rotation within the team, so they partner up with others constantly. So in fact training takes longer to be an experienced cop. Extra courses have to be completed afterwards, to keep up with changing laws and regulations. And of course extra courses to specialize into specific tasks. The police is far more organized on national level in the Netherlands, to prevent five cops ruling a village for three generations, as a family business.
The real problem is that most people in the USA are so convinced that they live in the best country in the world and only they know what is the best way to do things. Therefore they are completely closed minded and not open to looking elsewhere for information or advice. And even if somebody from outside the USA tries to tell them there are better ways they simply think it is a lie or worse SOCIALISM and should be avoided at all costs. It is really sad; they are their own worst enemy.
That is why US cops don't know the law and always escalate situations that could easily be de escalated.
Weird to say it, but the USA really is pretty primitive relative to most modern nations these days. Everything seems to be about cutting corners, and doing it on the cheap - and you just can't create a civilised and safe society like that. (I think we all know where the money has gone that should have been spent on education, infrastructure, policing etc..) Given that you folks have had a unique opportunity to design and build a nation pretty much from scratch, overall you've done a pretty poor job IMO. FDR had the right idea after the Great Depression. With his New Deal plans to rebuild the country, the USA could've seen a spectacular recovery. But once WW2 was done, industrialists seized the opportunity to enrich themselves, and the ethos of Roosevelts' New Deal was forgotten. You allowed your Federal and State legislators to focus solely on building profit, rather than building society - and so today, from a European perspective the USA has become embarrassingly backward and uncivilised.
When I lived in NL years ago the NL police blew my mind! Next level professional. I can’t look at US cops the same way. (As an attorney, I’ve seen from inside how the police unions promote police brutality. 3 mos of training, is not a flaw, it’s by design.). Let’s stop pretending the majority of US police are not a national security issue. They have more similarities to slave catchers than to modern day professionals. (Any constructive criticism or reform attempts often result in quiet Union approved work slow downs that spike crime numbers & blame the critics, with union calls for more $$$ “resources”.
In the US they teach cops how to shoot & in Europe they teach cops how to avoid shooting.
Three months of training for a state employee authority figure that’s allowed to carry a gun in public and use it at their discretion is insane.
Jordan Green perfectly described the main problem in US attitude: Instead of fixing the bad roads for everybody, rich people just buy a better, more comfortable car just for themselfes.
Ok, you're Dutch now. You wanna know why I say that? Your speaking volume went down after getting on the train. Inburgeringscursus: Geslaagd.
It'd be one thing if it was 3 months for a country where there's practically no guns. But 3 months in a country that has a MASSIVE gun culture, where a cop has to be constantly on-guard cause anyone can have gun? Fellas, wth y'all doing O_O
Some years ago I talked to an American that immigrated to NL and he asked some questions about driving in NL. I was surprised that he was anxious about cops in cars in relation to speeding. I told him to his surprise that that is not a thing here. That speed is controlled by camera's.
We love our dutch cops! Cop appreciation comment
Here from Atlanta! Happy to see some shots of Atlanta :))) Just came back from Nice, France. Love Europe!
Did you know that the most important part of preventing criminality is the neighbourhood teams. People that are from the neighbourhood, in contact with the dedicated neighbourhood police officer who can be contacted directly.
Learning how to drive a car is about understanding traffic and the rules, being able to anticipate to other road users, how to respond in certain situations. The technical stuff like shifting gears, steering and braking is secondary. It is basically the same with becoming a police officer. And that takes time. Especially when you take into account that you give these people weapons.
To "fix" the US you start with the school system. Then most of your problems will solve themselves.
I've been trying to tell American that the US can do so much better. But because I'm not American, they see that as an attack. Even when I say the American people deserve better. They would say: Yes, but... and then name something they think the US is better at than the Netherlands. Yesterday someone said to me: "But the US is a first world developed country, so I don't expect you to understand." What? lol
3 months? wow. that.. that explains a lot
Definitely a longer process here! And K9 handlers and Equestrian officers have extra training during and after the 3 year basics!
