@panman1964

Autotrader bollocks. I’m a consumer only and I never use the “recommended “ search option, my primary consideration (once I’ve set any other filters”) is distance from me.

@rocketmunkey1

EVERYONE does cheapest first ! recommended is just an annoyance to buyers.

@robster230

As a consumer, when I search for cars I narrow down the filters to exactly what I want. The adverts are nearly always for more expensive cars and I ignore them.

I can't be that unique?

@leefisher816

I use Auto trader to search for a specific car - I NEVER use recommended - most of us know what we want!

@tony2930c

As a customer, I always ignore their recommendations. Buying a car isn’t like picking a random suggestion — you want to filter by price, distance to dealer, mileage, age, and features, then carefully compare all the options. That’s how decisions are made.

@flc3503

100% DOWNGRADE! After watching a podcast over on shifting metal it made us re-evaluate. We carried out the same research you have done and had the same call with our rep - who gave us the scaremongering speech you’d expect. We’ve reduced from an Ultra Package which we’d been on for years, down to Standard, saving us over £32k a year. Its been a month on this new package and we haven’t noticed any difference in sales or our analytics charts in the portal. Make the jump and I’m sure you wont regret it!

@ZZR1200ZX

As a consumer when looking for cars on Autotrader I always search distance followed by mileage followed by lowest price.
😂😂😂

@seanbissett-powell5916

I'm an online retailer in a totally different field, and this is a trend I'm seeing across the board. A bunch of high tech middlemen are trying to transition from being a useful help to gaining sales to controlling the market, allowing them to impose more rules and more costs on retailers who will always be smaller than them. Amazon, Facebook, Google etc are all the same. I'm trying to find alternative ways to get in front of customers - face to face, word of mouth, social media etc.

When it came to buying a car (not something I do too often) I knew what I wanted, so filtered by engine size, gearbox, body shape and acceleration, looked to see what the options were, then refined the search by each make one at a time. All the ads and recommendations seemed to be trying to sell me cars that were massively more expensive than my budget, I guess on the assumption I could just take out finance. But I'm unusual - I save until I get to my budget, and that's what I spend. No credit, borrowing, or lease agreements involved.

@Scouse.Malinois

2.5k a month for 9 cars?.... fuck that id be parking them on the street with a for sale sign before i paid that😂

@w1how

Im a similar dealer to yourself and downgraded my package to starter a couple of months ago. The response level dropped off and I had constant calls and emails from AT saying they were ‘very concerned’ that my adverts were getting less views however having reviewed my actual sales since the change they have actually increased so for me the change to starter has been a good move. AT are fleecing the motor trade using their dominance in the market and now the job has tightened up then it’s understandable that dealers are looking to make savings and streamline their businesses to stay afloat. Thats my take anyway - love watching the videos keep up the good work. Will Howarth

@phaeton_buggy1575

Like everybody else I search, distance, age, budget, mileage, year, options, what really pisses me of as a consumer is if I set a budget they offer me cars that are above the budget. Just one thing to note, that option 4 to me looks like you don't get any car slots & you will pay for them as extras.

@keziasarah

Actual fluff is out the way and real content starts at 4:38

@chrisaris8756

Tell you what Rob. I’ve bought 7 cars over the last 3 years (my wife has gone through 4). These are cars from £20 to £70k and not one has been bought via autotrader. I do look at autotrader to get an idea of what’s about, but no, I go elsewhere - mainly local(ish) dealers websites. Also I never take any notice of their good price/fair price bollocks. I’m a grown up I know what I want and what I want to pay. Dump Autotrader and develop your YouTube and other social media presence. Love the channel.

@JelloTypeR

When a company forgets the customer is what keeps them in business and uses them only as a source of income then that company fails not too long after. AT is all pride and hubris now, they’ll be replaced just every other firm that’s forgotten the core of its business.

@djm9936

What does my head in with using AT as a consumer is that when I go sort by distance, every single “nearest” vehicle is one on Cinch because they can manipulate where their location is. 😡

@4x4CB

I worked at South London Autotrader in 1987-88, great times, mobile phones were just coming in and I was telesales on the "parts, accessories, services, insurance, etc" section, dealing with dodgy mobile phone dealers and fly-by-night insurance brokers (one of which scammed me for a £600 traders insurance policy) Nobody knew what the internet was back then and Autotrader was a newspaper paper weekly publication, and there were regional offices with 'local' ads, Copy deadline was Tuesday nights (many spent working til 9-9pm) Almost everyone in the office smoked and you couldn't see the other end clearly by the end of the day, thanks to the smog... I started smoking within days of starting there. The 80's were f'ing brilliant

@davewelsh732

When I go to autotrader I already know what I'm looking for. I type in the car and model, price etc. I never use the recommended option. Didn't know it had one to be honest, and to me seems pretty useless. I'm choosing my car not autotrader. Go for the standard option 👍👍

@pboytrif1

As a consumer it depends on the value of the car im buying. I own a G82 M4 Comp, I knew exactly what I wanted and I checked all cars that fitted my criteria. I also have a cheap Astra... but I wasnt so specific about what I wanted when I found that, I just wanted something cheap... and for that, I think the recommended adverts were more in my face

@DeneQuittenton

I remember going to Autotrader Warrington offices back in the late 80’s with my Escort … They came out with a Polaroid ‘instant’ camera took a photo and it was in next Thursdays magazine for £4.99 😅

@MaxMax-th7uz

Great video Rob , car dealer friend had 60 cars on autotrader and was paying £6000 plus vat ! And that was 5 years ago !
With so much choice of advertising, many dealers use eBay motors package For a fraction of the price !
My friend hadn’t used autotrader for a year as he was selling well to passing trade and eBay .
Wasting £4000 on months advertising and didn’t sell hardly anything extra !
