He is right, you will never sink past your boyancy point which is about your belly button. Also if you ever do find your self in quicksand and a sinking, lay on your back and you will stop sinking as you spread your weight.

Just to be safe make sure that you check how deep it is with a stick or something before you make the mistake of stepping in it and sinking really deep into it

The depth of quicksand also matters. I once found a 1 ft depth quicksand. Under 1 ft, there was land. So it was pretty harmless.
