Do not contact HR, they are not your friends, they are there to protect the company at your expense.
At least you don’t have to worry about a 50+ year old woman taking maternity leave.
I lost out on a promotion because my boss said I was not young abd hip enough. That was 20 years ago. My current employer told me I'm too old for my job. How do I please people like that?
You're talking about > 50 years old. Really ! I once failed to be part of a graduate programme or an entry level job in the tech because of my age. I graduated I was 32 years old and that programme was recruiting only graduates < 30 years old. I tried to convince them that I have the required degree and I am only 2 years older by the time but they said it's their recruitment policy (South Africa). The heart of a man is always ready to be deceitful.
Age? my father was an engineer. After age 60, he tried to help the family. He worked as a dishwasher at the restaurant 7 days / 24 hours a week. As the matter of fact, he worked at night shift over the weekends. He stopped working as he diagnosed with Parkinson decease at age 85. I earned a B.S. in Accounting (3rd degree) at age 55, but hiring managers don't appreciate mature and hard workers.
HR is there to protect the company, not the worker. Don't bother going down the HR route.
Colorado Springs has very bad age discrimination.
My Mama is 63yrs old and works in a warehouse. She is the hardest working person ive ever known! She has a bunch of young lazy coworkers that do the absolute bare minimum. The young kids in their 20s are so lazy, they dont want to work period!
I’m discriminated against by age in healthcare. 90 days or less and I’m OUT. It’s also due to my healing, no longer codependent, no longer seeking validation outside of self etc. Nursing is now made up of travelers and agencies. It’s my license on the line yet no one held accountable by me. It’s out of my hands but all my responsibility.
I have been a target of ageism
If you’re seeking for a job after 50 , dye your hair dark, style your hair in a very professional way and dress elegantly and put together every single day. The idea is that managers equate your age with competence, experience and refinement and not old, obsolete, and out of fashion . Appearances do matter unfortunately.
I recall a meeting once, where things started to dawn on me. I had a super important staff announcement and everyone ignored me. Then this young woman started speaking, about not very much and the room stopped to listen! I might as well have told everyone there was a tornado outside and to run for cover, they would not have heard me! The biggest shock of all? They were ALL other women. I would have actually felt better if it were men tbh but had no idea women treat you worse as well. As if overnight, I had clearly become invisible without realising it.
I think Im dealing with that now. I weird because I didn’t want to think that but coworkers are pointing out things out to me. Old man comments less responsibility and now I going through a PiP. I feel force to change jobs
My dad's in his early 50's and he still works, so why not the rest of our elders?
I’m 59 and I see it as well. It stems from people not living around their grandparents as children, seeing viable older people living life and prospering. I grew up with my grandmother’s presence, living on same property, different house, so I never feared life and aging. Young people were dumped in daycare, and were not taught to respect their elders, and possibly taking their advice, due to their lengthy life experiences.
What's odd is that those of us 50ish grew up with the first tech already. We saw the Atari's, the Commodore 64 etc; I was programming mine using magazine code when I was 13! I worked in tech for 25 years, and then, as if by magic, after 50, finding a job suddenly became very difficult. I have blamed myself enough, and after having recruiters confirm it (age bias), those still in the workforce confirm it, and a career coach says, "I present well in test interviews," I'm not so sure anymore. There is a mentality that only people of a specific age range can sit in an office and have meetings to complete digital media work. As for cutting edge, only some organizations have a cutting edge and wish to spend on it. Most are years behind in software versions due to costs, and if you think every corp is a Space X or apple, you are mistaken. Cheers!
It's that serious?
I'm 55 years old man 👴 🧓 👨
Uh this is not new, jobs do this all the time, but call it downsizing or overqualified for a job.😡
