Cheers for the patience with the one week delay on this one - I wasn't well last week and just didn't think I could land a video properly at the time. Hopefully this feels worth the wait.

One reflection up front is that most of what we've seen funded for Golden Dome so far are existing programs and efforts that are being accelerated or better linked together. Many of them (like more space-based sensors) have potential value in a wide variety of scenarios. The reason I focus on the idea of homeland missile defence against a peer opponent so much is because that's one of the biggest ways Golden Dome might be different to US missile defence policy over the last several decades. How much emphasis actually ends up placed on that aspect of the plan, only time will tell.

The other major reflection here (having gone back over a bunch of what was written about SDI in the 80s and 90s) is that even though there are still a huge number of unknowns with the program there are probably a few key questions that history suggests should be asked consistently throughout a project like this one:
- Will this actually likely work, how reliably and against what?
- What can an adversary do to get around this and how much of a problem is that?
- Does this deliver value for money compared to all of the other competing priorities on the table.

Asking those questions isn't about blocking all development efforts, it's about making sure that the right efforts go forward.

No commander is ever going to say they want less missile defence and no civilian population is ever going to say they want to be less protected from incoming missiles. But commanders want and need a huge range of things to do their jobs effectively, and the civilian population also has a variety of needs and wants that go well beyond their missile defence preferences. The important part is to honestly assess the right balance and make sure investment flows where it can have the most valuable impact. It'll be interesting to see how that aspect of this effort plays out in the coming years and how U.S. competitors and allies choose to respond.

What a beautiful dome. I walked in here and said “wow that’s a great dome”. Some are saying it’s the greatest dome of all time. Greater perhaps than even the great HAGIA SOPHIA. We love the Hagia Sophia don’t we folks? Used to be a church. Many people don’t know that, and it’s sad. It should maybe be a church again, and we’re looking at that very closely. Very closely.

“Including a dive into everyone’s favorite topic: the economics and mathematics of missile defense.”

YEAAAAAAAAH! HOOK IT TO MY VEINS!

@atypicalprogrammer5777

I don't mind delays, I like quality better

@coryjones4040

Quality over quantity. Stay healthy and put out videos because you're happy with how they came out, not when it's an arbitrary day on an arbitrary schedule.

@Attilles

51:28 Jacksonvillian here, these nukes would do billions of dollars of improvements to our fine city. ;)

@baxterdevin

Every time Perun is delayed, I think the Russian bots have won. And every time he returns, my hope is restored. I hope you are feeling better, Powerpoint Man. We need you more than ever these days.

@josephcarland

The thing that surprised me is that the media are not having a field day on the idea of an insanly expensive defence project. After they fired 1000's of people under as part of a cost cutting mesure.

@dannyzero692

I remember when Trump said there's gonna be a golden dome and then he domed all over the place. Truly magnificent.

@andrewgilbert1585

Glad you are better, and I look forward to seeing this episode. Please don’t overwork yourself, a few less episodes would be priceless if it kept you well. Thanks!

"Getting into the glass export buisness"!!!! Well played sir, well played.

I was starting to go through withdrawals bro.

@heyokah

Dodge ball - why unpopular children become engineers in order to create missile defense systems.

@rivetjoint9628

I think the lesson we have all learned here is that PERUN is overworking and needs to slow down a bit, If I have to watch one video a month it's actually worth the wait. I would much rather slow and steady than gibbering wreck. Take care from all in the mother country.

@fresnelschacc

Hi perun, i am a korean highschool student who discovered the joys of defence economics through your channel!
i have been interested about specifically the economics in the development of transportation technology as far as i can remember.
thank you for getting me to discover my favorite subject,
i have currently copied your slideshow design meticulously in order to apply them to all of my school projects.
i am currently trying to analyze flow in your presentations and the tone of your voice.
i have found the fonts, the gradation, the funny Australian yellow lemon orange colour.

@zchris13

I really like how directed energy weapons were in the "reasonable, existing projects" category

@MM22966

22:38 To give an idea of what Perun is talking about, during the middle Cold War, just San Francisco alone was protected by about a dozen sites of Nike-Hercules SAMs (pictured). That was a bunkered battery/radar complex plus a support network, at each site, for one city, all to give a decent chance against bombers and very marginal chance against incoming ICBMs. If you're ever near the Golden Gate Bridge, you can visit one of these sites; it's maintained as a park with guided tours.

@jimsackmanbusinesscoaching1344

One thing that I think is culturally interesting. The movie Terminator was released in 1984 at the height of the SDI hype.

@johnvissenga328

Well worth the wait ! A proper number crunching, brain stretching, power point Sunday ! Really glad you're back and I hope properly fit again 😄
