Also from experience, doing it wrong can cost you time! 
If they don't share about de-dup and such, don't be afraid to select from the table to quickly get a look before joining if your not sure.

As a data analyst , It's amazing how much my data engineer doesn't understand these concepts. I had a conversation with my data architect a few weeks ago about why the tables were constructed. They in the way that they were and she said" it's not my job to understand the nature of the data. I just supply it". I'm now looking for a new role 😂😂
