Zack... your staring in this video was so unusual compared to other videos. You were scaring me! Lol
I am a huge fan of CPO programs. I bought my wife a 2017 MB in Jan 2020. The in service date was August 2017 so the MB warranty is good until August 2022. The car had 24k miles and the dealer had to put 4 new tires, brakes, and rotors in addition to making the car look new. In Mercades cost world could run $4000+. Maybe I paid a $2000 premium. for cpo. However, I got a car that would only cost basic maintenance for 2 1/2 years. Everything else is under warranty. It's like a buying a new car at half price. If the is any problem, they give you a nice loner car and you are on your way.
Always have a independent pre-purchase inspection done regardless if it’s CPO or not. I purchased a CPO 2015 Audi S7 from a new car Chicago Audi dealer owned by Auto-nation. It was a very expensive used car. Long story short purchased in the middle of February. Normally I do pre purchase inspection, but because I trusted that a CPO was true to what they advertised I didn’t bother. Anyhow I get the car home to Ohio and 10 days later, my mother calls me and says it looks like your paint is peeling off your rear bumper/diffuser. I blew her off, thought it was just soot from the exhaust. Later I found out it was paint peeling. I called the dealer they blew me off about the paint. $5k in paint work needed after we found out both bumpers were thrown on the car with shoddy bodywork. The dealer refused to show me the signed certification checkpoint worksheet. After 90 days of back and fourth and threatening a lawsuit they offered to buy it back for full asking plus all expenses incurred by me.
Bought a cpo 2011 fusion in 2013 with 19k miles on it still have the car now 144k miles in it and it’s been pretty trouble free over the years and saved 40% off a new car sticker this is the way to go
Markets Man 😂 Appreciate the knowledge and love the father son dynamic.
Totally worth it, I purchased a 2017 Lexus Nx200t I receive a loaner car every time I bring it in for service. I just had an experience where I dropped it off at Sewell Lexus in Dallas for an inspection and windshield wipers. The bill was $67 and I had the loaner for the weekend. I would not buy a car any other way
I followed your advice and recently purchased a CPO vehicle from a franchise dealership with a good price. I did a lot of research on the vehicle that I was interested in. The vehicle was on the dealer's lot for a while like 2 to 3 months. I went to the dealer on the last few days of June before closing out the first half of the year. When I was talking to the manager about the vehicle, he did admit that I came in at the right time. I ended up getting the car with extended warranties and $3000 less than the advertised price.
When I was shopping for a BMW i8, I only looked at CPO cars and found 13 examples. Most had some weird damage, like underbody panels hanging from under the car, tires with less than 5mm tread (I brought my own gauge), wheel and collision damage. I found one salesman who disclosed that they can certify anything and the benefit to me is the 1 year of extra warranty and if I wanted to negotiate on the damages, I could, but they would likely only drop the price by 50% to replace the broken items. LOL, I learned that at least for the i8, the dealers were trying to move the cars quickly before they depreciated beyond what they paid for the car and paying the $4k to 5k to "certify" the car, made it more appealing to sell it on the secondary market.
Love you guys...love your truthful approach to these topics...with a sprinkle of comedy as well.
Ray, I still have my '06 Acura TL which was a CPO vehicle. Still love the car at 104k miles. I added a 2016 Sorento SXL 2 years ago for cargo needs which is also CPO and its been very reliable as well. Kia's bumper to bumper CPO warranty runs through 2023. Huge fan of CPOs.
Ray — per the Volvo Cars website: “Depending on the date the pre-owned car was certified, Volvo provides a 5-year, unlimited mile warranty, complimentary roadside assistance, and more. ... Once a Volvo is certified, this designation stays with the vehicle. The warranty is fully transferable to the new owner at no charge for the remainder of its lifetime.”
So many used car dealers slap a sign on the windshield “CERTIFIED USED CAR” and they don’t mean squat...... I think Lexus or Acura’s programs would be really good. Good that you explained it so good....
Thanks for this discussion. I’m currently shopping for a CPO only from manufacturer shops. But the better brands seem to have not much inventory.
On Toyotas it seems like the CPO warranty starts not from the original sale date, but from the CPO sale date: "Coverage begins from date of Toyota Certified Used Vehicle purchase"
Imagine sitting in your living room with two friends across the room having an in depth discussion but instead of looking at each other they are both looking directly at you. Picture Jimmy Kimmel interviewing a guest but both were gazing directly into the camera while talking to each other. Relax and enjoy your conversation. Just some constructive criticism. Otherwise I love the chemistry you both have and truly appreciate the information you provide by unveiling the mystery of the auto sales industry.

I just purchased a 2020 Acura RDX, SHAWD, Advanced Pkg, with 14,500 miles. Coverage is bumper to bumper 100,000 miles / 6 years (Jan 11, 2026) and powertrain 100,000 miles / 7 years (Jan 11, 2027). I paid about $3000 less than a top-spec 2023 CRV or Forester. No brainer for me. Bought a 2013 TSX loaner from same dealer in 2013. 6300 miles at purchase. For me, CPO is the only way to go and Acuta has the best program in the business.
Lexus has the best CPO program IMO. They add 2 years unlimited mileage warranty to whatever factory warranty is left. If you find a nice service loaner that has 5k miles or a newer low mileage vehicle, you can get a 6 year unlimited mileage bumper to bumper warranty. That's what I did for my last car, I bought an 2019 RX350 service loaner with 3k miles at a steep discount.
Lexus CPO warranty begins at the expiration of the basic warranty or vehicle purchase date, whichever occurs later, and remains in effect for 2 years.
