How it’s made is probably one of my favorite shows ever, next to modern marvels
Discovery Channel was the default option in my house from late 90s to almost 2010. When became a reality channel, I just left and never looked back. Now I look for science, history and nature in Youtube channels. Some of them has the same quality as those classic shows and thats all I need.
So basically the Discovery Channel became the cable version of a Michael Bay movie...heavy on explosions, but not on substance. Great video as always!
How it's made and Mythbusters were some of my favourite shows as a kid. I tuned into the channel years later and couldn't believe how much it changed. Lucky we have YouTube now to get some high quality science and engineering content from channels like Mark Rober, Smarter every day, Scott Manley, ext
National Geographic has also become click bait on youtube and myth and conspiracy channel. Disappointing.
I remember the classic "Extreme Machines" show which had a huge impact on my life and pushed me towards engineering. Even to this day, seeing some episodes of the show brings back all the excitement and goosebumps I had waiting for 9:00 pm when the show used to be scheduled at. Thank you to the creators of the show.
Yes, the old Discovery channel... (que nostalgic feelings) Just like the old "The Learning Channel" (TLC), before reality programming, or the old History channel, before "aliens did it".
I remember when Discovery channel first appeared on Indian TV in around 1996 & man what an impact it did on curious Indians.. Even my college professors were talking about it in college lectures. Good old days..
Couldn't aggree more with this sentiment. Same goes for the History Channel and several others that I loved as a child. It's sad to see that this sort of media now only live on places like Youtube and not shown to a wider audience.
Discovery Channel nobody knew the language, no subtitles, everybody still watched.
I grew up with a love of science, took every STEM class I ever could, and ended up becoming a professional pilot. I credit the Discovery channel for almost all of that.
These shows inadvertently have inspired me and probably many others to peruse a (STEM) degree in engineering. I still watch them at night every now and again. It’s sad that they went down the reality route which there was a market for but they completely ignored where they came from. Glad YouTube has filled the gap but I don’t like how I now realised this will be a “back in my days” moment when I explain to my children how good how it’s made, mythbusters and aircrash investigations was on tv at random times of the day.
I'm blessed to have grown up watching the old discovery
It became almost unwatchable in the Netherlands, I can remember. One hour of discovery was at least 25 minutes of commercials.
I used to flip between PBS, TLC, History, and Discovery channels as a kid. Shows like How Its Made, Junkyard Wars, Battlebots, the first couple seasons of MythBusters, Forensic Files, Extreme Engineering, How the Universe Works, and The Colony helped make me who I am today. After American Chopper took off every single one of those channels became reality show networks and I quit watching them as they provided nothing in the way of science. The Colony and Junkyard Wars affected me most as they showed how you could repurpose scrap to build amazing things, which I realized to be a very valuable skillset. Seeing the things that gave me inspiration turn into more channels with people yelling and crying is pretty soulcrushing.
Through the 90s and early 2000s I watched so many of those Discovery documentaries in elementary and middle school and very much remember the "golden age" that came after they were produced. Mythbusters is one of the best examples. It's really a shame they went this route because when you describe the "old school" discovery viewers it really was me to a T. I was asking where'd all the cool shows go now it's just Gold Rush and other crap...
Give me my old Discovery Channel back 😭😁 I hate the reality 💩
It went from a scientific and interesting to made for stupid and boring.
Discovery Channel was a channel I shifted to growing up as I outgrew children shows. The ability to learn in an entertaining manner was incredible! It shifted my whole perspective on learning as a child who was intelligent but did not enjoy school. The DC's shift towards reality TV was not the least bit interesting to teenager me and this ultimately pushed me towards YouTube as a resource for entertaining educational content. It's a shame to see what DC has become given the impact it has had on my life
