I never get tired of this song. The lyrics, melody, guitar and drums are simply fantastic! Easily the most underrated album of the ‘90s!
Love Sponge from the early 90's 'till the eternity!! Everything Sponge!!
There's a girl. Her name was Beth Godin. She was wicked cool. It sounds trivial but she was the best of us. She died in a crash a while ago. I hope she lives on in this song.
Sponge were super underrated, and probably the main reasons were that they weren't enough exactly of what the music fans were looking for back then; too aggressive for maybe adult alternative stuff or mature sounds, but too polished for those looking for something grittier. Their songwriting and musicianship are absolutely top notch; coming out of their glam/ butt rock days, they were also too late to really make any inroads in that scene, either. So it kind of reminds me of Butch Walker's career arc, as he transitioned out of his original sound, but retained a razor sharp songwriting, melody and clarity in Marvelous 3 to offer something different to what was going on otherwise. Trying to play the songs the way that they do with the grace and power is much more difficult than it seems, and this is easily one of the best guitar duos of the 90's, both Mike and Joey took full advantage of dynamics, phrasing and overall style in that when you listen to it, there's two distinct personalities on guitar. They'll both play the main chords, but will often be playing totally different things at other times. Some bands sold more records during that time, but arguably not many have retained the respect that Sponge have, through these years. The melodies and quality of the songwriting are really what last.
Masterpiece!
Some things need to change. What I mean by that is diamonds of talent are passing on us and often times I hear others saying “I can’t believe he’s gone” followed with “I never had a chance to see them”. Well, I invite all of society to see the band Sponge when they venture near your hometown. Sponge and Stone Temple Pilots were my favorite bands growing up and I’m very lucky to be able to say I saw them both. Here’s the thing tho, not only was the Sponge show WAY BETTER than the STP show, but I met Vinnie Dombroski and the rest of Sponge with my about-to-be wife and it has cemented in as one of my best days here on earth. Sponge fckin rocks.
