The use of diplomacy is one of the reason why Eastern Roman Empire is able to last for a thousand years. They made many of the neighboring kingdoms as their allies. Going for an armed conflict only occured as the final resort. They tried their best to avoid having war with potential allies. Because of their relunctant to engage war, the crusaders viewed them as cowards.
