Box turtles are not needed to be in water at all times I’ve seen them in the middle of the woods it’s where they lay eggs.

When you find a turtle in the road you move it to the grass facing the way they were going if you move away from where they were or the way they were facing they will get disoriented they know where their going so moving them will messes up and disooritate them

You should have left the turtle alone. It knew where it was going. Is the female is probably going somewhere to lay eggs if it's during the fall or late summer.
