Older versions of D&D will always be there for people to play, they have the broadest adaption of any ttrpg in the world and are still great games, regardless of what One D&D will become.
I definitely perceive that part of the popularity of DnD with young people right now is that it is such a good in person, analog hobby. Hopefully they'll figure out that purchasing your books and accessories in the store is the way to insure that there is that 3rd space to meet new people to game with. Also want to echo the comment about fractured gamer population: miniatures is experiencing the same thing. There are so many new games out there with pretty decent to great minis that it can be ironically hard to find people to play with. Hopefully RPGs can survive this.
I definitely like the idea of gaming stores like that, but the one in my town has almost been a nightmare version of it, the owner was always pretty mean and cared little for other peoples opinions or choices, I heard plenty of rumors that new customers came in once and never returned, and I can see why. There is new words that he got better, but it is also a store that is very "in group vs out group", many "low life" gamers, "That Guy" people who are rude and antisocial run people out as well, not to mention my own friends group long ago split and never really recovered, leaving one half in the store, and the others to just feel like it was not worth it anymore. But I also live in the "far north" of scandinavia, and the 2nd closest gaming store is 3 hours away travel, again, a real shame it is so scattered far here.
