im jamaican & i speak br português, primarily bc i study in br (university), i dont really have much connection to the language but its sometimes cool to speak another language yk. i learned it enough to communicate in 8+ months, these days i use it mainly in uni and one off times if i go out etc, I think where i live in br as a black person makes it tiring to speak pt, people primarily assume im african or cant speak the language bc i usually only speak when spoken to. i need to start studying português again, tho. i ain't doin 2 well classes. theres alot to unpack but id say depending on where in brazil u live and/or if you people/ friends with which to communicate ans practice the language etc it wont be so bad, which im my case i lack the aforementioned things, could've had more friends etc if I'd tried accept the little positives i had

In the background I also watched content in Portuguese and I listened to music in Portuguese. This however was not part of my ACTIVE learning strategy.

I’ve been studying Portuguese for 10 years and I’ve visited Brasil 19 times but I can’t read or converse in Portuguese and I have to translate everything into English one word at a time. I need to find a way to learn and understand without translating. I’ve been practicing every day with my girlfriend for 7.5 years and she only speaks Portuguese but I still can’t understand her or converse. I have to translate everything she says.
