A unicorn thanks mam
Iβve looked into the concept of vowel and semivowel and found out a very handy rule. At least I hope π β¦ The troubles with indefinite article come in general with a vowel, e. g. the question Jennifer asked. The general rule here says βunicornβ begins with a vowel so one ought to use the article βANβ, butβ¦this is not the case. So, we should make a distinction between vowels and semivowels. The Cambridge dictionary reports βA semivowel is a gliding sound in which the speech organs start at or near a close vowel and immediately move away to some other vowelβ. This definition is illuminating since if we find a word which starts with a semivowel we simply use the article βAβ treating the semivowel exactly as a consonant! Another minor issue is when the term starts with an βHβ, but this is quickly fixable since we use βANβ only if the βHβ is silent.

We have to distinguish between semivowels and vowels, just like year and ear are pronounced differently. It seems that βaβ can't be βanβ unless it's before a vowel.
Thanku ma'am
