I’ve looked into the concept of vowel and semivowel and found out a very handy rule. At least I hope πŸ˜…β€¦ The troubles with indefinite article come in general with a vowel, e. g. the question Jennifer asked. The general rule here says β€œunicorn” begins with a vowel so one ought to use the article β€œAN”, but…this is not the case. So, we should make a distinction between vowels and semivowels. The Cambridge dictionary reports β€œA semivowel is a gliding sound in which the speech organs start at or near a close vowel and immediately move away to some other vowel”. This definition is illuminating since if we find a word which starts with a semivowel we simply use the article β€œA” treating the semivowel exactly as a consonant! Another minor issue is when the term starts with an β€œH”, but this is quickly fixable since we use β€œAN” only if the β€œH” is silent.

We have to distinguish between semivowels and vowels, just like year and ear are pronounced differently. It seems that β€œa” can't be ”anβ€œ unless it's before a vowel.
