This is the best news in millenia. I wish I could live long enough to see home prices decline, the oceans bounce back, and other species expand. Please!
I heard it put this way: "The wolves are concerned the sheep aren't reproducing enough."
Many of us in our 60s are unable to work already, bodies wear out, we’re not machines ! I had to retire early and lost a lot by doing so, I was just beginning my peak earning years and my lifestyle tanked when I had to stop working, as well as losing the huge contributions I would have continued to make to my retirement fund. It’s cruel to expect people to work into their 70s, most won’t be able to anyway. Those who want to, more power to them, I just hope they won’t need to. Social security isn’t enough, who the heck can live on $1,200/month? Even with paid and clear housing, it just isn’t possible.
Call me crazy BUT a world with less people sounds like an AWESOME one; less people means LESS traffic, LESS pollution, MORE housing, HIGHER wages because of the "lack" of workers...UNFORTUNATELY nothing will be done to solve this upcoming "crisis", humanity and politicians in particular have a tendency to hide their heads in the sand, I feel so sorry for my nephews and nieces who will be the ones to clean up this mess...
Just imagine this. You save up your whole life, you own your house when you retire. Then you go to sell your house and it’s worth 5% of what you paid because there are so many other houses on the market that aren’t selling. There’s nobody to buy them.
Lots of good points. Little talk of the destruction of environment with so many people, of how technology might mitigate much of the issues of smaller population, and whether lifespans will continue to grow or reverse. So many unknowns...
I listened to the end to find out if the elephant in the room would be addressed: how many people can our ecosystems sustain, our oceans, forests, soil. A pity that wasn't mentioned
Not everyone is experiencing a negative birth rate.
Companies don’t hire older workers.
People today don’t understand critical thinking and that nothing is really univariate. Rates mean more than numbers.
The aging population and the need for older people to work beyond age 67/68 (here in Italy at least) are conversations we need to have sooner or later. Government around the world keep asking citizens to "make more babies" but making more babies is not the solution. This is not the first time I hear experts talking about this same issues, or read books that raised the same questions. Dr. Sciubba makes a good job at introducing the topic, as thorny as it is.
I find it really gross how she keeps referring to human beings around the world as "valuable resources" and "human capital" .
I'm all in for opening the borders. But I can imagine in 20 30 years, the 1st world countries could give insentive so high that skillfull individuals from lower income countries would move to these 1st wourld countries, and left their countries brain-drained. I mean its already happening, but it can get worst. The disparities between countries would be crazy
In the 70s there was a human population ‘clock’ on DuPont Circle in Washington DC. Back then there seemed to be no question that there was a population explosion. I can’t get my head around the idea that there should be more people. It’s not just economics, it’s the environment (which is certainly an important part of the economy).
Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" went like this: I remember when rock was young Me and Susie had so much fun Holding hands and skimming stones Had an old gold Chevy and a place of my own... I was born in the early 60s when this world was still a decent place, but today, more than 60 years later I surely wouldn't bring a child to this horrible world that it became.
And maybe, reimagine the economy so that it is a tool to support people, rather than something we should prop up if it is no longer suitable for an aging poulation.
ETs have told us that Earth is designed for 400-500 million people, but we have twenty times that. They also say that Earth could accommodate 50 billion people, but there is a catch. We would all have to be very responsible. No pollution, no waste of resources, high efficiency, everything. In other words, we would need to be civilized. Humans are great problem-causers and poor problem-solvers.
On the one hand it’s encouraging to finally see this being discussed. On the other hand, it worries me that more effort isn’t being put into finding long-term solutions to what appears to be a downward population spiral. We need to address what societal and economic issues discourage people from having kids now as well as retool our societal carrots and sticks to encourage people to have children. There’s a way out of this! We just need to do the hard work to get there
This video misses out the coming of AI automation. Humanoid robotic embodiment is already in motion. This century we will be able to pass plenty of labour onto machines. The video also misses out on geneomics and biogerontology extending healthy human lifespan with new treatments.
