Now all they need to do is ban all the dropshipping companies.
As someone who designs all of the products that I sell, the change doesn’t affect me much either. Not a bad thing that Etsy might become less cluttered in the process.
this is honestly a fantastic change, etsy has been flooded with so much crap and this should cut some of that down.
I’m surprised they didn’t do this earlier. These 3D printing shops, in the main, are very anti-Etsy. They go against the entire point to Etsy. That’s original, handmade products. Crappy copies of the same toys everyone else is making is not what Etsy is intended for. I imagine that that’s what Etsy realized as well.
Will Etsy now extend this directive to include resellers, sellers of factory-made jewelry, used clothing sellers, and sellers of "vintage" items? Or are they only targeting sellers who use other creators' items through licensing? What about garment makers, leather makers, polymer clay "artists," and others who use "patterns and cutters?" And for all those custom 3D creators who now believe they don't have to compete with shops that only print licensed items, why would they be a problem for you in the first place? Are you designing dragons and other items that other shops are printing? Most likely not. If they print the same thing as 500 other shops, the market will eventually eliminate the vast majority of them. By the way, what happens to the original artist who designed the items and then licensed the STL file? What happens when people stop purchasing their files? I believe this is simply a marketing ploy by Etsy to say, "Look, we only sell handmade items from artists." Is it likely that they are willing to forego a sizable portion of their current revenue from resellers? This is highly unlikely. These are just my thoughts.
Considering how much drop shipped crap there is, I'm surprised they went with this first
As a 3d printing shop I fully support the new TOS
i have a feeling this is going to lead to a spike in people searching your store
It's interesting the majority of the videos talking about the ETSY shop update keep saying 3D printer production. This would actually include so many more mediums, CNC, Laser Craft etc. Like you, I have spent a great deal of time creating my own products and or solutions I want to sell,. The new ETSY update, is actually an old ETSY rule, many years back, say 10 years ago, it had to be yours to begin with then they loosened up the rules and then before you knew it, they were allowing all kinds of stuff, products etc, that are mass produced. Thanks for sharing the tips and have a blessed weekend. Happy 1st Fathers Day to you friend. Dale
Most people don’t have the time or the desire to learn product design and prototyping. Creating something from start to finish can take days, even weeks. Sure, you could pay someone to do it, but that comes with a big upfront cost and there’s no guarantee you’ll make that money back. Etsy is getting back to its roots and that’s what made it stand out in the first place, real people making and selling unique, products that you can't find anywhere else.
I think this change for Etsy is a good one. Now they need to do the same across many of the other products sold there: jewelry, costumes, etc.
The issue is that there are so many custom-designed items being sold on Etsy that are quite similar to one another. This could potentially lead to another challenging situation for sellers on the platform. What exactly defines "custom design," and how will it be determined?
Thank for the update! Wow the channel has been live less than a year and already at almost 10K subs, well done!
Screw Etsy and any platform that takes more than they give from creators. Easiest way around the nonsense is to have your own website to sell your products. There are also many creators on that platform that sell prints they have no legal right to sell. I think Etsy is trying to curb that but hurting others in the process.
With all due respect, this should have happened a long time ago. Etsy is a cesspool of unlicensed and ripped off prints. As a 3D artist, I would love to see Etsy ban STL sales.
I use someone else’s soap recipe, buy supplies off of amazon and pour soup into a premade mold. Is my soap “handmade”? I buy jewelry charms from China and assemble them on a chain I didn’t design or produce is my charm bracelet “handmade”? I use premade alphabet templates and cut out letters on my Cricut and iron it onto a shirt I didn’t make. Is my shirt with words “handmade”. This morning I spent 2 hours tweaking someone else 3d design, spent another 1/2 hour sanding and painting details on the model but thats somehow less handmade than someone buying beads from China and putting them on a chain.
They didn’t ban 3D shops, POD or AI Art, they banned stolen and reproduced work (worth the seller didn’t design themselves) except they didn’t JUST do this, they have been doing this since Etsy started
You’re doing it the right way. Thank you. Maybe get a Prusa in there. I feel like making your own designs with a Bambu can lead to IP theft later down the line. Those guys are doing some strange stuff with every design being sent to China before going back to your printer. Not a problem till it becomes a problem. I took mine off their cloud and put them in LAN mode in an older firmware and moved to MK4S and CoreOne for future production because of that. Also I’m an OrcaSlicer fan since I can slice single files into multiple brands of printers for big projects.
Necessary change. Etsy went from a cool interesting place to just absolute slop so I'm all for any changes they make to return to a unique storefront
