The United States' lack of guaranteed parental leave is embarrassing

@tomtenisse823

The US is really wild when it comes to parental leave...1 month...wow.

@rebekahjimenez2808

Always notify them in writing - not verbally. If you tell them verbally, they can deny they knew before they fired you.

@Bobywan75

Notify by email as well to leave a trace in case your employer suddenly decides he wants to fire you for unrelated reason.

@ChristianHawkins123

Calling 8 weeks off around the time you have a baby "Maternity Leave" is the most American thing I have heard today.

@midnightmisthollow

it's absolutely wild how short maternity leave is in the US

@michaelalr

American maternity leave is insane 😭 in the UK, you'd be going back October the next year 😭

@celestedin

If you are also having a rough first trimester you can inform your boss and get accommodations if needed.

@Kayalucky4

GET IT IN WRITING!!!
Otherwise, they can do illegal things like fire you and get no blow back... You need to be able to prove they knew you were pregnant and requesting FMLA leave. That way you're protected!! ❤

@y.b9092

Wtf a month maternity leave??? You get up to 3 years PAID in my country 😂

@ghostyfries3658

I’m not even in college yet and I still watch these videos lol. I’ll be coming back here a few years from now.

@BreezusSneezus

One thing you didn't mention that's incredibly important is to make sure you request maternity leave in writing, even if you also ask in person. This way if a company does something illegal like eliminate your position before you go on leave, you'll have proof of retaliation and be able to sue.

@janika1026

Wait what? She’ll be back back in October after having a baby in September?! If someone gets pregnant in my company (not in the US though) it’s good bye for at least half a year, possibly up to two or three years 😂

@marinamorales707

The “tell, don’t ask” is one of the best tips I have ever learned for many different situations.

@seekeroflight85

I’ve never seen these supportive bosses in real life no matter where I’ve worked

@liah55

Only 1 month maternity leave!?!? I'm so grateful for living in the UK with a full year leave!

@herbststern2378

That is so wild. I start again after two years of parental leave this coming month. 12 months paid, 12 months unpaid. I hope you get better conditions soon

@Mspiggy375

When I told my boss I was pregnant with my first child she was furious, not happy for me. She was also pregnant, due just 2 weeks before me. Which means we wound both be on maternity leave at the same time. Hurt my feelings and was a bad experience.

@Christina-xc7on

I had to notify before I was ready because my morning sickness was so bad. They were really supportive and I got some extra accommodation while I was so sick. The right time to disclose is different for everyone!

@jennyboda8421

I work in construction. I told my boss the moment I knew I was pregnant. He said “see you in a couple years or so.” The government paid my mat leave. Thank you 🇨🇦
