One of my uncles, a civil engineer, once explained to me just how much work and attention to detail it took to build a brutalist building. The planks for the forms that took the wet concrete had to be carefully chosen according to their grain. Knots were not allowed. These were then sandblasted to enhance the wood grain structure so that this appeared in the dry concrete. It was almost a work of art to get all this right because later there was no going back to fix mistakes. These were visible in the building's facade for the rest of its days.

They look cool and I appreciate them as an art piece. But I would never want to live in one or in a city filled with them. They make you feel uncomfortable. People have enough stress, no need to be assaulted by the buildings as well 😅

@panwamave

Brutalism gets a bad rep but I've always thought it's awesome. In Mexico there's a ton of Brutalist architecture in public spaces and I love going there. There's a ton of beauty in exposed concrete.

You could also review the ICC Building as well as "Die Schlange", wich are two rare buildings wich represent late modern high tech architecture.

@cloudypianos

Most brutalist architecture in the U.S. looks like crap but these are pretty interesting.

@bertkreft9689

greetings from berlin - i know this "mäusebunker" very well - it is great - not nice - i am a product designer - developing bicycles - and i appreciate this extraordinary architecture

@Kim-lc3fv

Ive been in nr. 1 and 2 when I worked at the Free University and we had to take water samples from our department to be tested.

@NC-qc7wd

This building is magnificent because Organic Brutalism's aesthetics marry opposing forces to strike a harmonious balance. The robust, unrelenting forms of Brutalism, using raw concrete and aggressively straightforward design, mash with the gentle, undulating lines of organic design.

@peter_meyer

Sorry, but the ICC is definitely missing in the video.

@skpjoecoursegold366

the church looked like a prison.

@harenterberge2632

Alternative titel: the most depressing buildings in Berlin.

@DashingPartyCrasher

Well, to each their own. I just can't relate to anyone's love for lots of concrete and plaster, no matter what style. To me, brutalist buildings are definitely brutal to look at. 😖

@SonicPhonic

The concrete stucco at St. Agnes made me think of the probability of dust and an allergic reaction. How could this surface be cleaned? Most of the buildings at my university-York, Toronto are brutalist, designed for California, which doesn't work for Canadian winters. Architects seem to have ignored common sense for approximately 3,000 years or more. Architects often seem to be appeasing their egos at the expense of comfort for those who use the building. Romanesque churches look so dour. Gothic cathedrals obviously have too much wasted space. Classical architecture seems ok, but Baroque/Roccoco....massive piles of just for centuries.

@Bobaklives

Mouse Bunker may be the best combo of name/appearance 😂

Mäusebunker is even better in German.

@jasne2992

ICC Congress Building is like from an Alien Movie

@RasheedKhan-he6xx

There's a small one on the corner of Gottschedstrasse and Bornemannstrasse in Wedding that I like. It looks like a machine gun outpost. You can see it in Streetview in Google Maps. And there's a green building opposite the new BND complex on Chausseestrasse. It's not raw concrete but it's quite brutal and scary looking.

@GenericUsername1816

Modernist architecture in general sucks, yet brutalism stands out as by far the worst modernist abomination.
