Finally some love on the 9F quartz, i really love the sbgx261. Also worth noting service intervals are much longer on a quartz mouvement compared to a mechanical mouvement. And great for set it and forget it watches in a rotation of different watches.
Quartz movements are often underrated, but I find them absolutely fascinating. From the robust and classic Miyota 2115, a true workhorse capable of lasting years with remarkable precision and virtually no maintenance, to the beautifully decorated Seiko 9F, which combines craftsmanship with exceptional accuracy, quartz watches have so much to offer. And let’s not forget the Bulova Precisionist, with its mesmerizing sweeping second hand that rivals the elegance of a Spring Drive. I’m eagerly waiting for the day we see a quartz movement that combines the smooth second-hand motion of the Precisionist with the ultra-high precision of a top-tier quartz movement, and perhaps even incorporates a microrotor like the vintage Seiko Kinetic models. It would be incredible if such a movement came with a transparent case back, showcasing its internals like mechanical watches. After all, quartz movements also feature gears, jewels, and can be beautifully decorated. Even some affordable Swiss quartz movements show attention to these details, with jewels and minimal plastic components. A design like this would truly elevate the appreciation for quartz technology!
My father gave me his Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust ref17013 couple years before he passesd away. I love it, and the fact that it’s a quartz movement makes me like it even more as I haven’t seen another one yet. He got it on early 90’s and I’ll keep it forever.
Thank you for highlighting Quartz movements. I love mechanical watches but I have found quartz watches to be more practical for me in my profession. The grab and go ease of quartz watches along with phenomenal accuracy make them my everyday go to choice.
The Citizen is my best watch I own, although it is not my most expensive one. The 5 seconds accuracy can be reached easily. Mine gained 1 second in 7 months.
I would also point out the Oceanus line from Casio, specifically OCW-S100! It's a Japan-market only model, but just like the G-Shock, it's Multiband-6, Solar, and features multiple timezones in an (allegedly) Zaratsu-polished titanium analogue watch!
I love his videos and his take on watches. He does it in such a humble way. He’s not snobbish or big headed way.
Love your stuff, Teddy. Therapy after the shift is over
I love the look and feel of my Bulova Super Seville. Because of the smooth sweep from the precisionist movement inside, I have to remind myself it's quartz.
Longines VHP! One of the most advanced quartz movements ever developed! A high end, high accuracy quartz just does it for me, more so than a mechanical. To each their own as they say :)
Quartz is totally under-rated in the industry! My travel watch is a Grand Seiko quartz (SBGV243) and I absolutely love it. It's robust enough that I can take it on holiday and not mind magnetic fields and it taking the occasional knock. It really comes into it's own when I'm in London every couple of weeks. There's massive watch crime there but I can confidently wear it around because (a) it's relatively inexpensive and (b) it's under-the-radar. It does all this while looking elegant and sexy enough to wear to a fancy dinner out. Everyone should have a quartz in their collection.
The Longines VHP has to be one of the most impressive quartz watches. + or - 5 seconds per year and perpetual calendar for under 1k. Plus incredible battery life. Crazy
I still got the Omega Aqua Terra quartz 2008 ,38.5mm. Still great. Need more quartz watch stories here.
Great video as always, Teddy! I do believe it’s time to also start noticing Oceanus, Casios’s high-end quartz play. Especially their Manta collection deserves some praise. Oceanus has been around for 20+ years and used to be JDM only but a subset of references are sold and marketed by Casio in other markets, notably in USA (only since last year I believe). Take a look and please let me know your thoughts!
What a fun and fascinating rundown of some of the greatest quartz watches! Thumbs up for the Lunar Pilot, which just radiates no-nonsense utility. I have one and love that Precicionist movement. Breitling ana-digi on my wish list; most notably the X-33 Skywalker.
I think the issue for a lot of people is that they have only ever experienced the super affordable end of quartz watches and they think the only way to get a beautiful, well finished watch is to go into the mechanical side of time keeping. I felt the same way when I got into the hobby, but after picking up a Citizen "The Citizen" I sometimes feel like I got duped by the marketing of the watch industry into thinking only mechanical watches were "true" timepieces. I get the romance of older analogue technology, but quartz doesn't have to be a dirty word. There are amazing and beautiful quartz timepieces.
Loving Citizen lately Teddy, great vid, thanks
I love my Bulova jetstar. Probably going to collect a few more precisionist models. Great movement.
The Bulova Jet Star deserves to be in the conversation with the smoothest sweeping hand in the quartz game.
