As a long islander, I'm surprised that people find this confusing, but also, if you do a little more research, you can find a couple of Long Island and New York City Independence referendums from a while ago that would have made Long Island and New York City two separate states while leaving the rest of New York State as a state

So many people saying this isn't confusing and then also saying they live there. I would hope you're not confused lol. For the rest of us, it's a little weird to constantly hear about the 5 boroughs with one having "Island" in the name, and then seeing a big island on the map that includes 2 boroughs, neither of which is the Island named one, and then another separate place that also has Island in the name that is not part of the city.

Lets clarify: Long Island is made up of 4 counties. Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. Brooklyn (Kings County) and Queens County are on Long Island technically, however they are city boroughs and governed by NYC. Nassau and Sufflok the other 2 counties have their own representation and governments so to speak. When people from the area talk about going to Long Island they are referring to Nassau and Suffolk even though Brooklyn and Queens are part of the Island. Most people from Queens and Brooklyn when asked dont even realize they are standing on Long Island.

Brooklyn and Queens are attached to the whole island but those two are not a part of Long Island. Long Island Starts after Queens.

Long Island is a WHOLE ASS DIFFERENT PLACE from Manhattan.. That's like calling Chicago St. Louis. 2 of the 5 boroughs that make up "New York" are ON the island, Brooklyn and Queens, but Long Island is its own thing..
