Sadly this is so outdated, within 2 hours of release. What a world we live in 😢
Niall sounds like an art critic who has mistaken a grand mal seizure for interpretive dance. Trump isn't playing 10 dimensional chess, he's throwing a tantrum.
Niall argues that Trump has a more realistic grasp of the limitations of U.S. power compared to his predecessors. But the reality is, we already know that Russia and Iran have exposed themselves as paper tigers. Russia, despite its military might, has failed to conquer its much smaller neighbor—a war that should have lasted weeks is now dragging into its third year. Iran, under pressure from Israel, has shown little real strength. That leaves North Korea and China as seemingly powerful but untested. Autocratic regimes often project an illusion of command and control simply because they don’t have to "air their dirty laundry." But what they seem to lack is true competence. When major world events unfold, these regimes are often exposed as being far more internally decayed than they appear. Trump isn’t playing 3D chess—he just fires arrows and then paints the bullseye around wherever they land. That’s his history: failures or mediocrity repackaged as unrivaled success. He’s the Manchurian Candidate, playing into Putin’s hands by maximizing chaos. If Europe steps up and helps Ukraine secure a lasting peace, Trump will undoubtedly claim that was his master plan all along.
Niall: Vance is a realist Vance: You don't respect us enough. You didn't say thank you to us. You didn't wear a suit.
I witness a New York style mafioso ambush today in the White House organized by the President of the United States. Gangsterism.
Niall Ferguson has successfully proved that with phenomenal mental gymnastics, if you go from a starting point of supporting a person and a movement, rather than principles and results, no level of rationalisation is a bridge too far 😂😂
Good for you Sam. You’ve got it right.
Could China and Russia be any happier with the Trump presidency. He's the biggest gift they've ever received.
Niall's sane-washing of the Trump team is a sight to behold, especially if you're Putin.
While Niall raised some valid points, I can't shake the feeling he's trying to obfuscate the reality he's backed a crank.
Painful. This guy is proof that you can be a "fellow" at Stanford and Harvard, write 16 books, and sound intelligent and yet be unable to think your way out of a paper bag. It's depressing to see people like this contorting themselves, ignoring reality, because their identity is staked to having supported Trump. And what could be a bigger failure of thinking than that?
Victim blaming is par for the course with MAGA.
Niall seems to think Trump is acting with reason, as a rational person. But Trump is clearly nuts. So how much of what Niall sad can be taken seriously?
Yet another rationalization of Trump's crazy behavior as 4D chess
Niall thinks Trump is doing advanced analytics before he opens his mouth... that's all we need to know about Niall's judgment and intelligence. There are so many great people to have on your show, Sam. Niall is not on that list.
God this is such a horrific disgrace. So much effort by so many millions of people to build a safe and secure world, wiped away in an instant by a psychopathic toddler.
this guy sounds like hes trying sooooooo hard to validate insanity as some clever 4d chess move.
Now interview Anne Applebaum so that we can right this analysis. Trying hard to respect Ferguson, but to say that Trump has a "rational strategy" just proves he's delusional regarding Trump's ability to rationalise. Trump is transactional.
It’s worth going to Sam’s substack and becoming a member to hear the hour missing from this partial conversation.
