Many underestimate the contribution of morality and self-restraint to the stability, peace and prosperity we've enjoyed for 80 years. A world in which every nation grabs whatever it can, whenever it can, because it can will be a violent and unstable place. Spheres of influence when driven by the worst impulses of the power-hungry men never stay stable for long. The old U.S. posture of formidable military strength combined with sponsorship and maintenance of a rules-based world order was effectively more "America first" in its outcomes than what I fear comes next. "Cast your bread upon the waters and it will return to you" is not a law you can circumvent or outsmart.

The "rules based order" has largely kept the peace in Europe for 80 years. In the new might-makes-right, there are no principles other than power, world....conflict is inevitable.
