I've been curious about why many art museums were dark. I assumed one of the reason was that the darkness and atmosphere from it discouraged visitors to make touches on art works, but maybe I got it wrong. This video gives a good explanation about it.
Thanks Betty! Great staring point for my class presentation on this subject!
This channel is so cool! I haven't seen any channel quite like this. Why don't these videos have more views?XD Please keep up the fantastic commentary on art and art museums. I hope to share these videos with my fellow classmates at my art high-school.
Your vids are sooo helpful and your voice sooo soothing :)
Really interesting Betty. Is this why a lot of museums do not allow photography? I often get bemused when I'm not allowed to shoot video in museums, which, I suspect wouldn't affect the artwork?
I bet if museums like the Louvre tried to explain this to people they would have better results at trying to avoid damage from camera flashes to the Mona Lisa. and other more beautiful works of art. But then they get greedy and prohibit any kind of photography at all, which is just unfair.
So is there a ratio between light damage and amount of time something is exposed to light? because I know that museums often don't allow flash photography, but the flash lasts less than a second. Unless its less to do with time and more to do with light intensity.
Does the energy of short wavelength light displace particles of the paint? I imagine it's complex and it really depends on the specific cases of each type of art, but in general how does high energy wavelengths of light damage artwork?
Hey I learned about this stuff in archives school
Hum. We have a small museum here in our home town, but it seems to be very bright. I have been to dark ones, in larger cities. Maybe ours is just doing a bad job? I am sure there are ones that do worst than others. Are there organizations that enforce proper care of famous works? We are a small place, but have one repetitively famous piece (Tornado Over Kansas by John Steuart Curry) and wonder if all is being done to care for it properly.
Don't forget humidity and temperature control. Perhaps another topic?
