4:54 Hey 14yr firefighter here. A few things. Firstly thank you for saying this. You’re exactly right that the self clean function is a NO NO!! Not only does it not actually clean, but it will burn electronics or smoke any particles left in oven. The biggest thing though that people may not be aware of is that it will LOCK your oven door until it completes the cycle on most models because the heat gets so high. I have been to about 3 of these calls in my career. No serious fires but it ruined the ovens.

I've added a first step. Store all racks but the one you typically use, because they're tedious to clean and leaving them in the oven means they all get spattered. If you need a second rack (rarely) you can always retrieve one.

We learned how to clean an entire oven this way in grade eight home ec. In the 1970's! I always put a layer of tin foil on the bottom of my oven under the element...then I can change it periodically with no fuss. Cuts the cleaning time in half! Canada 🇨🇦

Also a tip from me! I just cleaned my oven the day before watching this video! Put some water in a tray , turn on the oven and create moisture in the oven to help loosen up the grime. you can add baking soda or vinegar to that water as well. Cleaning time halves. it was so easy to clean afterwards.

Pro tip, after cleaning I turn the oven on to the highest temp for 30 mins or so. Burns off any remnant smells, because I don't want that newly cleaned smell when I cook something for the first time after cleaning.

i have never cleaned my entire oven, just cleaned up the occasional spill. I was hesitant about cleaning the whole oven, because I didn't know which cleaner was best to use. Seeing your clean oven motivates me to give it a try.

After cleaning last time, I invested in a very nice nonstick mat for the bottom of my oven... it just wipes clean. Best $ spent!!

Wadded up aluminum foil works amazing on oven racks or any wire racks. I had heard that it worked. I did not believe it. We bought a home with a dirtyish oven. Nothing was getting the racks completely clean. I finally gave up and tried the aluminum foil. I was blown away. It worked so well.
