A data scientist come from another specialization such as finance, economy, actuarial science, physics, biochemistry and other. Computer science is more oriented data engineer and ML, but this is a great path to be a junior data analyst before a data engineer, so you have better to study math, not to be good.

I am a data engineer and was looking at switching. Nope, it would be a pay cut. Every data engineer needs to know data science, but data scientists do not need to know data engineering. If you do not, we create the pipelines to move the data through the first 80%. I also meet with DSs and DAs to understand what they need and how they will use it. I am also 80% done with my master's in DS.
