I keep seeing a common pattern where someone has been a fan as a child and stops supporting her as an adult
Small note (nothing to do with Melanie, more to do with your wording) age regression is not the same as age play. Age regression is non seggsual and just has to do with regressing to a younger state of mind to make yourself feel better. I used to age regress a year ago and those are some of my happiness memories, watching cartoons, cuddling plushies, chewing on pacifiers and coloring coloring books.
I also noticed how she sometimes wore revealing clothing while in her Crybaby character, I didn’t really notice it at first, but now is weirds me out.
bro. I was like 9 when I first saw her and started liking her music, HOW was I supposed to notice.. I feel so naive lmao 😭
Personally I think Melanie got away with it because of the era Crybaby was created in where pretty much everything was "edgy", and Melanie's music was no exception.
Melanie Martinez comes off as a trauma tourist. She wants to be taken seriously as an artist, so she makes these songs with dark themes. Melanie never experienced any of those traumas, so the songs come off as extremely shallow. While those songs have resonated with many women and girls, it doesn’t change the fact Melanie is profiting off of traumatic experiences that she knows nothing about. The fact that she’s so comfortable sexualizing child aesthetics shows how she has no respect for the people who’ve suffered from those traumas either.
I thought for the longest time that the crybaby character was supposed to grow up during the album and that different songs were her at different times of her life, BUT SHE'S A TODDLER ALL ALONG ? that's so weird
as someone who had a really fucked up childhood and been through most of the things melanie used to portray on her videos, i used to listen all of her music on repeat as a way to cope with everything that was happening to me at the time since she always made me feel seen and understood, now as an adult it makes me so sad to realize that everything about her career was so fetishized, disgusting and manufactured that i almost feel personally betrayed
This makes me sad tbh. Her music and stuff was one of the reasons I’ve got into the creepy cute fashion/style.
I never even knew she didn't even go through any of this trauma as a kid. It feels so weird knowing this now as when I was a kid I heavily resonated with her music 😭. Really disappointed about how she went about these subjects and profited off of the vulnerable people like you mentioned.
I always thought the point of the childish aesthetic mixed with adult themes was to be morbid, like, thought that was the point. Saw it as morbid art meant to be unsettling. Never was a big fan, apart from a couple songs. But that was my outside perspective.
We need to stop sexualizing children and childish things
Another thing I find odd is that in the Carousel music video where Cry Baby once again goes after a boy that ends up breaking her heart, the guy playing the love interest is clearly portrayed to be older. Such as dressing like an adult man, acting like an adult man, and having a stronger more masculine figure that portrays him as an adult man. Meanwhile Cry Baby is dressed like a little girl, meant to act like a little girl, and wearing bows, frilly skirts, and other child clothes. And if this wasn't meant to romanticize the "Lolita" trope, then she could've also portrayed him as the little boy that was in the illustrations, but she didn't, she chose to keep one that's meant to be a child and one that's meant to be an adult.
FINALLY PEOPLE TALK ABOUT HOW WEIRD THIS WAS
people did talk about it!!! there are a lot of things on tumblr and twitter when the crybaby era was happening in real time but the support for her was definitely louder than the valid critiques. just felt it was important to say this as someone who had boots on the ground back then. i didn't like her beyond dollhouse cause it just got weird as fuck when the crybaby album dropped, and this was when it debuted. it's really sad our voices can get lost in the noise when we're speaking up about people doing awful and harmful things on such far reaching platforms. thank you for uploading this and continuing such a necessary conversation.
Im Brazilian and started listening to her music when i was around 10 or 11, i didn't knew a lot of english at that time so i just thought it looked cute and edgy because i saw other people making animations of it thanks to her i fell into the DDLG community at such a young age thinking it was just lolita and kawaii fashion, so fun/j
It’s honestly fetishized, and I support Timothy…but I still miss her from the child inside of me ://
It’s genuinely crazy how most people who were her fans got into her music from ages 7-12, or even younger, especially with the themes she talks about. Its all about the aesthetic, it really was and is, which is why people ignore the allegations and truths. They believe they’re special being part of her fanbase for so long, its oddly parasocial.
Obviously Melanie is an adult woman and can pose how she wants. HOWEVER, the way she's going about this is inappropriate. There are ways to make statements about CSA without... dare I say glamorising it. Ik it's up to parents not musicians to protect their kids but she goes out of her way to appeal to younger people and then does things like this.
