"The real Rome was in our hearts the whole time, the real Rome was the friends we made along the way."

So good!

@LVPUSTrismegistus

Minor mistake, the young overpromiscous wife of Claudius, Mesalina, didn't kill him, although she tried. It was the latter one, Agrippina, Nero's mom, his niece, who did it.

Next Pax Americana?

@snipman8067

With Nero at least, it seems pretty clear he had a neurological disease since he started out as a pretty decent emperor for the time, but later in his life, he started to go insane.

7:19 The main way Julius Caesar became that rich was by selling approx. 2 Million Gauls as slaves.

Reminder that Caligula didn't make his horse a senator or consul, he said it as a joke/insult to the Roman Senate. "You guys are so worthless I could just make my horse a Consul and there'd be no difference." Caligula realized where the real power came from and didn't see why he had to play act like Augustus did.

Austin makes a really good point at 01:27:57 about embellishment and character assassin. Anyone talking about specific facts about individuals 2,000 years ago (specifically what they did in their private lives, their motivations, their psychological profiles) are just spewing BS. Roman Emperors, believe it or not, had people who didn’t like them. Many of which were writing long after they died. Caligula making his horse a Consul may very well have happened; it could be a sign of insanity, it could be him trolling the Senate. It’s a nice historical anecdote but I don’t think you can use it to build a robust character synopsis

48:05 wrong. Genetic make up of romanians:
54.6% Balto-Slavic
29.5% Thracian
15.9% Levanto Anatolian dna
They are closest to modern day serbians, montenegrians (moldovans more distant because they have more slavic)
Romanians are mostly assimilated slavs and roman settlers that have been brought in were primarily from levant, anatolya, egypt, even somalia as archeologic evidence suggest, as in case for most pf the Balkans. Romanian language till 19 century purifications by french elite have been almost slavic as much as it was latin

I thought in an earlier podcast he claimed that Roman birthrates declined because of urban growth, meaning, in cities, there is less incentives to have children, and over time less people have them. Not because of state power.
