1 have good relationship with mngr 2 Work on what company really values 3 complete on current level task before taking the higher level task
1-perfect your relationship with your manager 2-maintain meeting current level expectations while exceeding to next level
I'm of two minds on this content. One mind is that this is a smart guy who's walked the walk and he knows what he's talking about. The other mind is that there is always a tendency to oversimplify - that getting promoted or succeeding is just a question of looking at the options in front of you, tallying up the pros and cons, and doing some simple math. Like it's literally so simple that anyone could do it. I think the content is a little of both.
"senior engineer is the new junior engineer" that hurt a bit
Great video. I work in finance for a company that mirrors a lot of what FANNG does. Yes ur manger is critical. But I would also like to add two other pieces of fundamental truth I’ve uncovered over my decades in the job market. 1. High performance at ur level is necessary but not sufficient for promotion. And 2. U must go above and beyond as stated but if u can find ways to solve ur bosses problems those are the areas I would focus on. Even if it’s not what u think is a priority. Best of luck everyone
Your $500,000 story reminds me of when my speculative stock went above $1 million briefly, and I only sold about 20% (still did ok I suppose). I also own many of the original shares, but they have declined substantially from the peak. This was also during the peak mania in 2020-2021. We all have choices to make. Great video my friend.
Now --- and for the next 20 years --- the managers will be absolutely key. AI is like driving a "Formula 1"- every mistake is amplified a hundredfold, but the potential 'gain'/ output is equally massive. The problem is, stress leads to mistakes, and managers themselves can become a source of that stress --- even without saying a word --- if they’re not stoic and haven’t strategically prepared for what’s unfolding; mentally, they’re sitting on a "ticking time bomb".
Great video Steve! Some good advice here. One feedback, it could be useful to unlock all videos for free here on youtube. It’s unintuitive, but I think this is the way towards greater fortunes.
Promotion starts with relationship and by relationship. If your boss does not like you, you will not get the good projects to work on. More importantly, your achievement will be simply ignored by your boss. How to build a good relationship with your boss? It's a million $ question, Steve might have answer. :)
If you get higher in the hierarchy then the job profile changes significantly. A good programmer/ technician might not yet be ready for such a position. Thus it doesn't really matter how you perform on your current position because that is not a good indicator of how you would perform on the higher position. That you earn more money doesn't really make things easier because it makes these positions attractive for unprepared and unsuited candidates. Taking the quick route might not help.
4:35 Seriously, same story. Except my Carl left to AMD. Same advice I'd give. Absolutely, cosign this.
This checks out and makes sense. Love the succinct version of this. I’ve ways been curious about negotiation strategies and the words and timing to use for advocating for yourself. I’ve also read that there’s some gender bias in how you ask - and that not all strategies are created equal. I wonder - when do you ask, how often, how long is it acceptable between levels, when you’re at level one or two or etc what is the difference in contribution like and how can you set yourself apart. How can you try to build a better relationship with your manager and win him over, when is it time to move on Great video :) Thank you!!
What to do if you want to change technologies (eg. going from web dev to embedded dev)? Do you have a video about this topic? Or finding the most fitting subcategory of SE.
I want to get my next step, on my current Job we had 3 layoff on 1.5 years, I ask for a review a year ago, they said will be soon on February. that date they made 1st Layoff, I wait to middle, then they ghost me. I ask for a new review a month ago They made a layoff again, and 2 weeks ago, again. Its time to me to go, I am little angry because I feel angry but now I need to left this job. I made an extra work but to be honest you finish exhausted.
Amazing content as always. Thanks!
The TC diff between 6 and 7 is $200,000 annually? That’s a lot. I do see much difference from 5 to 6😢
Why did you NOT move out of Amazon after the Bob fiasco?
Nice video. High value
Step 1: Make sure you are not in public industry. Hard lesson I learned entering the workforce with DoD...
