This basically just makes large corporations even larger. They have all the sales data, access to all competing products etc.
The Bettergoods brand is definitely trying to look premium, but everything I've had from it just tastes slightly better than Great Value. Ingredients aren't very premium either compared to other grocery store in-house premium brands.
We live in fascinating times. Big box stores like Walmart are making record profits while citing higher prices are a result of "inflation," then leveraging that to sell more private label goods that are an even higher profit margin.
For those curious why the Walmart looks so nice, this one is in Bentonville Arkansas, the home of Walmart... in general the ones in the northern area of the state I have seen are pretty good. And they have minimal security glass nonsense, at least outside of electronics.
"private label" doesn't necessarily mean that retails "make" (as you say) these products. It just means they've entered a contract with a manufacturer to create a private label product that only they can sell. In some cases the major manufacturers that already have their own name brand labels on the shelves are the very ones who "make" these private label goods.
I live in Portugal, here every market has a store-brand product equivalent to basically any popular one, from candy to rice, they’re about 25% cheaper if not more, and they great, I just buy store-brands here
huge news for me as a shareholder with 1.13 shares in walmart
How could you discuss this topic without mentioning Costco and its Kirkland brand? Its success is what these other companies are copying.
Where is the Walmart in this piece? I've never seen a Walmart establishment so orderly, tidy, and clean in my neck of the 'hood.
As a consumer, I see this as a win. Competition from big brands such as Walmart only helps the industry and lowers prices.
I like how they call it "BetterGoods", basically saying "Yeah all our other stuff is trash but this one is better. Trust me bro"
Premium is a very strong word to call Walmart brands 😂
As someone with celiacs, great value is doing something right with their gluten free products. Now with better goods to have more choice of things to eat and not get sick. I live in a rural area and there is not a lot of choices without driving an hour away. Gluten free is not trend, it’s not a choice for a lot of us.
As a walmart driver, private labels are just the wrapper in a sense. The product is still made by the big manufacturers. Its the reliability for people in the private labels. So kraft cheese makes the product, but they will slap a great value private label on the product. So if kraft can send kraft packaging with their products they have to account for manufacture, transport of the product, advertisement, and profit. If walmart sends their driver there walmart is doing the transport, storing it, and advertising it on its walmart app, and distributing it so its a bigger margin for walmart to do the private labels, so all kraft has to do is make the profit from manufacturing it. Its a win win for everyone. But again its the reliability and trust in tge big brands is why people come to any store. Then they might try different things while they shop and love it. So stop spending all the money on the brand products because u are paying more for the same products u can get a lower price point.
Aldi and Lidl power 💪🏼
Nice reporting. Thanks for doing the legwork to thoroughly research and add context to this interesting topic.
This should have been titled “Death of fair marketplaces”.
Aldi’s “Specially Selected” brand will always be my favorite private label. You can’t beat the quality of ingredients.
