I love the comments here saying that Nick said the Sherman was better than the Tiger, when that was never once said. He is showing the bias in certain history texts stating that the German tank was WORTH 5 Sherman’s on the battle field when that’s pretty probably false based on the records he has gone into about the few tank battles that were fought during the war. It’s a rant about the phrase “the history is written by the victor” and how that only makes sense if the victors lie about what happened AND the losers DON’T lie about it. So the line can be used to push wrong information under the guise of “the people who won lie to make them look better”, when the losers could also do the same, and often do. Look at Germany, Japan, China, America, and basically every country that has ever lost a war to any degree or won a war to any degree. They both lie to make themselves look better, but they will also tell the truth if they can also make it look good for the winners.
This is a tiny tiny clip from a long rant in a 2 hour podcast. It’s very funny and worth watching since they’re all great guys and they have on great guests. They recently had on 2 WW2 vets which was cool.

@winniethepoohesq.5697

that’s totally right. it’s pop history. also when american tanks were facing german tanks, the german army was on a completely defensive footing.

in tank battles whoever fired first and hit first typically won the engagement. German ambushes on advancing allies were sure to score atleast 1 hit and then either retreat or fight. german tanks were certainly powerful; however, they broke down frequently, had fuel shortages, had complex repair procedures, and were not produced in nearly as high numbers as the german’s are typically portrayed as having.

@bushboi

Sherman was the best tank of the war, no debating that. In theory there was 37 Sherman's for every Tiger tank

@mirkokoch2742

Dude, the German tanks had a better range and could fire five fatal shots before the American tanks were within combat range. I mean, as a German, I certainly don't want to defend Nazi Germany, but back then the Germans simply had more combat experience and constantly improved their tanks during the war. The Americans were trading partners of Nazi Germany until shortly before the end of the war, and when Hitler declared war on the USA, the Americans had hardly any experience in tank battles against the Germans. It wasn't the Shermans that brought victory, but the battle of materials with Russia.

@ic3olate

Excellent points about both arguing who had "better" equipment in a war, especially a near-peer one, and about capitalism.

@BayouBoy2443

The Sherman was the best tank of the war with the fact that it was so easy to manufacture, maintain and how versatile it was with dozens of variants being created.

Edit: there’s so many angry wehraboos in this comment section lol

@RyanGannon-z7m

Your beloved Warthog would exist without Hans-Ulrich Rudel. And guess what he did he wrote a book.

No winner's history in capitalism huh? Go study some history. It's all winner's history, capitalism or otherwise.

@VictoriousGardenosaurus

No one would just go write a book and lie would they?
I get that they were Nazis, but surely they werent liars too!

@RickySpanish1313

Weapons, speed, armour effectiveness and ability to service the tanks, not to mention the crew creature comfort due to size are what the experts claim… I personally think you can love your country without trying to tear down others achievements. They lost the war but they produced better military equipment and civil technology in most regards. It’s impressive stuff none the less. Much love, you know more. Just my opinion

@panzerwolf494

The reason people believe that stuff is because normally Shermans existed in groups of five or six. It's not how many you needed to take down a German tank, that's just how many you had when you did take down a German tank

@swspartanhwk

Sorry buddy but as an actually world war ii historian you are wrong
Even German tank commanders basically said that

The German tanks where actually better especially the tiger the thing is there where more American tanks and America could pump out 5 sherman tanks to one of the German tanks

@RyanGannon-z7m

This guy watched Fury and believed it was historically accurate.

@thomasfoster0327

@BrownBabyJesus

There are guys like this out there telling you Ukraine will inflict a strategic defeat on Russia with your money - that's literally the only reason you are funding a war that will have ended a million lives before it is over, not because it's true.

German tanks were the superior tanks, Russia does have a reserve force not far from equal to Ukraine's entire population, they do have practically unlimited resources and America is using Ukrainian lives simply to try and slow down Russia's economy and save their own.
