I know a lot of people in tech being made redundant at the moment - there's no such thing as job security any more. Self employment can be tough, but very fulfilling. Good luck with your journey!
That was emotional. The office seemed rather deserted. Almost as if you were the last man standing. A slight queasy feeling in my stomach so it must have been a wrench for you. A guy with your talents will always succeed whatever may come. Onwards and upwards.
Good luck James! As a 20+ year tech vet myself I was made redundant recently, and that was in a series B funded fintech. Why? Greed and trying to squeeze "value" out of everything. For every commenter saying there is no loyalty or job security anymore, it really is true. If I hadn't just got a mortgage 2 years ago I would seriously have thought about making that dive into content creation and side hustles. I did line up a job for the new year though, so I am going to concentrate on that 12+month emergency fund to pivot if I ever need to. Count me as a new subscriber and follower of your content. Cheers and I hope you have a nice Christmas with the family!
That was a bold step! Things might feel uncertain now, but stay strong—your dreams are within reach!
thanks for the video. I find it really sad and telling that even though you've been there for 10 years there was almost nobody there in person to say goodbye. The love and nostalgia is clearly one-sided.
Beautiful video, I have been to this office few times to attend some SAP events. It must be nostalgic for you to leave after so many years, good luck for next phase of journey 👍
Made me nostalgic ❤ I miss that beautiful office and you guys.
I retired from my Software and Systems technology Job (after 38 years) during the final days of Covid, so it was largely empty office, with only a single colleague in. Your office did not look exactly bussing either LOL. I just went in to finalise and close down my online work accounts, dump my laptop, phone and pass to security. A bit lonely sad, (aka Audrey Hepburn ending in "A Nuns Story) But at least I did not have to do a final day speech and drinks.
Good luck, man...really hope it works out for ya. I hope one day I'm in a position where I can go all in on content...maybe you'll be my inspiration!
Good luck on your future move!!🎉 Your contents are awesome and I'm just a new subscriber :)
Ex-Sap software developer here. I was not laid of but transfered into a SAP partner company. I am happy that you found what you want to do. Good luck! Amazing video and background music by the way!
Great Video James! I'm only at the beginning of my Software journey! But it's amazing to see that someone at your level decided to pursue something different and took that risk of leaving their job after 10 years! Good luck with this new journey!
You seem like a great dude. I hope for the absolute best for man, you’re going to crush it. We’re all gonna make it
You done right to close the laptop when you got the GitHub merge conflicts....somebody else's problem now!
Wow, so similar to myself, although I never really grabbed the bull by the horns. But after several years in UK IT, I emigrated to NZ, to get out of the materialistic nature of the UK or at least my network of family and friends. So been in NZ for 25+ years, and took the opportunity to pivot away from s/w engineering and move into management (I was crap C++ developer tbh) ... did management for 15 years and now do consulting (more how to use IT and a business enabler). Now 59 (in a few days). No debt (one of the reasons I moved to NZ ... live 8kms from the CBD). Family largely gone. Where did it all go. Have investments. Wife a bit younger and has a good job, so she will carry on for a few years. I could retire now. But the fear of not earning $ runs deep, as does the imposter in my head. WTF did my parents do? Nothing really...they were working class, so I appreciate the value of money. I do wish older me could tell younger me to relax, it will be all ok. Choices now: 1. I will likely continue to work for the next 2-5 years. Its low stress, well paid, and I have not got a clue what else to so atm. 2. After that ... probably sell the house, to pull capital out and add to the investments. Do the 4% interest passive income thing. 3. Live in SE Asia is something I am trying to sell the wife on. Or 4. Buy a motor home and travel in NZ ... get a dog. Or 5. Other. Still think about a start-up ... have a number of friends doing this. Some as a hobby. Anyhow, you are not alone, best of luck with the content creation. Oh, I am a trained extrovert. :)
At this time, everything is difficult, requiring us to adapt and choose a better new path. Hope all good things will come to you and remember to continue to make videos haha. Good luck🤜
Best of luck, I left AWS in Sydney a year ago also after many years with the company, decided not to wait for redundancy note. And moved to another country. First year or two it's going to be tough, but then you settle in a new place. Best of luck! Initially it might be shocking not to have a secure job, hope you have at least a year's worth of expenses saved. I'm 47.
Good luck James. Your content is superb, some of the best explanations I have seen
New subscriber but just wanted to wish you the best of luck for the future.
