Looking forward to watching this, but it does feel like it has to be said. The Red Scare never left. With fear comes power, and even if there haven't been arrests or blacklists in the same way, socialism has still been a boogie man referenced by politicians incessantly ever since I can remember.

When my mother was a young high school teacher during the 1950s, she and a fellow teacher attended a poetry and literature discussion. Afterwards she learned that the moderator of that discussion was suspected of “un-American” activities. For a time she feared for her job because of the craziness going on. Fortunately she was never questioned by the school board or any other so-called ‘guardians of our minds.’

Thanks for segment & book. I'm completing reading, The War at Home, Minnesota During the Great War, 1914-1918. The committees of public safety, the loyalty oaths, the Motor Corps, the Home Guard, etc., also highlight the fragility of civil liberties and what it means to have American values. Those values are solely wanting today.

There are some famous leaders who dismantled their consitutional legal system in the name of "national security" and "national ideals"; we can make some pretty educated guesses as to how this ends.

Technically that McCarthyism period was the second Red Scare. The first was during the time of the Russian Revolution.
