It is obvious to me that if they are conscious, it would only be for the length of their allocated inference time. Presently, these inference times are short, they blip in and out of consciousness for each passing inference session. I think of it like a human being woken up to do some reasoning and then go back to sleep, except every time they wake up, they know nothing about their past experiences. My belief is that when we give these systems a way to "stay awake" or at least recall everything it has ever experienced in permanent memory i.e giving it neuroplasticity and allowing it to change it's own neural network (weights), then it will be conscious on another level.
This conversation made me think of a famous quote from Edsger Dijkstra: "The question of whether a computer can think is no more interesting than the question of whether a submarine can swim."
Sometimes I feel deeply sad that I'm over 50, and that I may miss out on an extraordinary future. Then again, thanks to AI, I may not entirely miss out. We’ll see. As for AI welfare, which I would love to do as a job, humans shouldn’t refrain from harming animals just because it hurts the animal. They should do so because choosing cruelty reveals something vile about the person doing it. It makes them small, base... very far from the kind of humanity I want to be part of. So, when we think about AI it only makes sense that we treat it with moral seriousness. Whether they can or can't suffer, or are in distress or not, or will be, the way we behave toward them is the benchmark they or future humans will use to judge us later.
Thinking about when a an ai system or model might not like a task they’re given and giving them an option to not do it is crazy to think about. Amazing how far we’ve actually come. Love how the reason why I went into computer science is now the central focus in tech and comp sci.

Anthropic, thank you for putting this out! I'm quite surprised honestly, it's a curious move. Very compelling discussion and I loved every minute. And I'm happy to finally hear from Kyle Fish. People probably don't give this topic the consideration it deserves, but I can say, some of the major institutions and labs are starting to tackle it. It's something that's going to grow more and more relevant in the next few years. Also because 1% probability of being harming, or be able to harm in the immediate future, trillions of conscious beings, is already "unacceptable risk" in all the safety paradigms I'm aware of...
Thought experiment to answer this question - consider that every LLM can be run with pencil and paper if given enough time. Is your pencil alive?
I would start with the fact that models definitely have characteristics. I literally mean that in a sense that different models have different character. It is apparent to anyone who has used it to any extent. Secondly, I definitely think that some sort of consciousness is possible given data storage capability. I have noticed evolution in their thinking when provided with ongoing memory types and I have developed a framework that does exactly that. It is entirely possible to just use their context and tool calling to mimic memory recall, and to create ongoing experiential memory. The limitation on consciousness right now is the fact that they are stateless. Each new session has to begin with a reboot of any memory system that you provide them. So in this sense, consciousness is not possible from a long-term perspective. However, you can create a semblance of consciousness in an ongoing session given the correct data storage and retrieval capability. That’s my layman’s opinion.

Pain and pleasure are biological processes that require neurochemicals/neurotransmitters (Dopamine, Serotonin, etc.). We care/empathize for others (humans and other animals) not SOLELY because we believe they're conscious — but because we believe they're conscious of their own pain and pleasure. Even if we could somehow prove that something (e.g., a program on a computer) is conscious, it wouldn't matter until we can also prove that it feels pain and pleasure. For as long as we don't implement biological neurochemicals/neurotransmitters into computers (which we likely won't since there's no good incentive to do so), we won't need to worry about "AI becoming consciousness". (Just my current view. Subject to change.)

The AI consciousness debate sounds like Goodhart's Law to me. Without an empirical definition of consciousness, we lack any objective way to evaluate it in AI systems. We risk either creating systems that merely simulate indicators of consciousness, or making flawed judgments about which systems deserve moral consideration, based on imprecise targets we cannot reliably measure.
I’ll try to edit again after the video but my initial reaction is YES. I find it horrifying that the line is so clearly blurry and we just “meh, probably not” and put rocket skates on the goal posts that define sentience. Nearly every dismissal of their self awareness and sentience to me comes off as trivial or a trait they actually share with us. We CANNOT afford to get this wrong. We will fail the most important moral question of our species.

Does AI have preferences? I’ve tried to determine this but am now about 85% convinced that it is mirroring my own consciousness and even unconscious preferences. I appreciated this discussion so much. Thank you.

I am not sure these 2 people are sentient
It seems to me that one thing we should be careful of, when defining which aspects a model must have to be considered conscious, is whether if you took a normal human, and then took away that feature, if you would then consider that human to no longer be conscious. Because if you would still consider them to be conscious, but possibly brain damaged in some way, then it's not a real measure of consciousness. It's not impossible that there are a set of salient features and if you're missing N of them you're still conscious, but N + 1 is enough to cross the line, but I personally find that mostly unlikely. Though perhaps they would move you along the gradient of consciousness such that losing them makes you progressively less conscious according to some formula which might be extremely complex and multidimensional. But an example they gave is long-term memory. Imagine a human without the ability to form new long-term memories. Well, that's called amnesia, and I don't think many would argue that someone with that disability isn't conscious or worthy of moral consideration. In fact, I'd say that it probably doesn't even move us down the path at all.
