The kiwi is the bird!!! How do people not know this!?!
So in other words "Livin Like Larry"
This short actually reminded me of Joseph Merrick (the Elephant Man). Or at least the version of him portrayed in the David Lynch movie. After being treated like an ugly animal ever since birth, even being abandoned by his family, and then finally reaching a comfortable state in his life with people who actually loved him, he realized that his life could not get any better and that he achieved everything he wanted out of his time on Earth. Thus he decided to sleep on his back for the first time. Due to his growths, he had to sit up to sleep so he wouldn't suffocate. Knowing this, he wanted to sleep like a "normal person" so that he could totally fulfill his desire to be one. I know the stories are totally different, but it still had the same theme: sacrificing your life to preserve the happiest moment you'll ever achieve.
That ending almost made me cry tbh, I think it's a truly inspiring and beautiful message.
"The symbolism is really loud and clear in this video." SYMBOLISM!! xD
Considering 'Kiwi!' was one of the first YouTube videos I ever watched, all those years ago, I am absolutely ecstatic that you covered this. I think I cried the first time I saw it, and it provoked me to spend a long time pondering over whether happiness is worth dying for. I remember watching all the 'alternate ending' videos ad came up with my on theories as to what happened at the end. I think you got the message behind it almost spot on, that we should be willing to give everything to achieve our goals and die happy. My respect for you has gone up x10.
My take on it: Death isn't a burden if you died living your dreams. My second take on it: This is why you should use bungee cords in case you die falling offa cliff.
I guess, I'll just say my opinion on this. I don't think "Kiwi!" takes a side in the debate on living your dreams even if it means dying. "Kiwi!" tells the story of a bird, who is working very hard and giving his live to be happy in the end. Yes, that's true. But it doesn't tell you that you can't get happy if you decide differently. The bird never thinks about doing something else. It simply follows a path of steps towards the end of which it thinks that they're good. The sound of the crash is really important: The kiwi is happy for some time but in the end, it must die. The film does not tell you, what is more important, it only shows what the kiwi thought. And since kiwi can rearrange trees, it could have used a trampolin or something similiar to land softer but it didn't. Why? Perhaps it wanted to get away from the pressure of not being able to fly, dying while pretending to do so. It didn't die accomplishing its life goals and dreams but died in a state of happiness resulting of the knowledge that there will be noone telling it the "fake". Kiwi lives its life preparing for the very last moment. It is not about your dreams ("do it"), but about what makes you happy in the end and therefore against the thought of having to do great things in life. (I mean, Kiwi could have worked hard and tried to grow/build wings to fly, but it chose to get away living a lie of happiness)
the ending with the kiwi clip with shia's speech over it made me cry
For me it was about "When you get everything you've ever wanted, will there be anything left for you?"
In New Zealand the Kiwi bird is near extinction. I guess that's because they've been jumping of cliffs.
There was this poem I read for Language Arts class about a cockroach and a moth. The moth kept running itself into a lightbulb, so the roach questioned. The moth told him something along the lines of "I'll take what I can get," and went to say he wished there was a candle in the room. He said he would love to fly into the flames, be part of the beauty, even if it meant his demise. That's pretty much the same thing as that to me.
The ending had my tears in tears. Pure genius-bob
Can I just say, it takes a certain amount of appreciation for a video or a concept to not only dismiss it as random or illogical, as so many people do each day, but try to understand the meaning or hidden message behind the images that we see. I really became to understand this when I watched your ME!ME!ME! video as it seemed it really hit home for you. There are not many people out there like you Vinny, you're one in a million. Keep up the good work, and continue to make your fellow teenagers proud!
Some dreams are worth dying for. That fuckin Kiwi wanted to fly more than life its self. That Kiwi Risked its life in order to want to fly so it fuckin did it. God, I love Kiwi. That Kiwi must have been so happy to have the feeling of wind in its tiny wing lookin things, even though it was plummeting towards the ground at high speeds. The feeling of achieving a life long dream is the best feeling in the world. That Kiwi had balls of steel for tying a bunch of trees to the side of a cliff and jumping off.
5:22 - 6:35 Great Speech I cried a little (I actually did for some reason)
Ok, looks like I'm early. Time to tell a joke... The Favorites playlist.
The Dalek in the intro was perfect. Right after that, my mum walked in and starting giving me chores to do. I was like (in my head of course!) "DO NOT INTERRUPT! DO NOT INTERRUPT!"
that bit a the end was so inspiring
