Honestly the normal-map on its own feels like it could be a really cool way to make a mirror version of the player character, like Smash Bros' Wireframe and Polygon enemies
"See this lighting?" Ah yes i do, it looks pretty nice "See how it looks *bad*?" Oh
One small tip as an addition: you have her arm holding her sword have its own left and right illumination, but because all your normalmaps were generated from just the silhouette, the moment her arm touches the rest of her body the normalmap shifts. You may need to manually adjust the normal map to fix this or it could look very weird in certain lighting conditions
I mean it does make the lighting look more dynamic, but i wouldn't call the first look 'bad', just a simpler way to light it. After all, good looking pixel art has existed long before normalmaps were used for dynamic lighting in indie games, so i think any ampunt of complexity with the lighting can work if it reflects the fidelity that you want your art to have in the game you make.
Very useful for game devs thanks!
I've been wanting to incorporate normal maps into my own project, but was worried about having to bake it from a 3d mockup and overlay it. This Laigter tool looks extremely promising-
The software called Laighter is great for automatically producing them I found
Isadoraโs design goes hard
the normals are implemented well but even the flat lighting transitions look super solid in motion. gotta keep in mind the character isn't usually just halted in place
YouTube heard i wanted to make an indie game and started giving me your videos, thanks for the tips mate
Another insanely good, quick informative message that explains a frequently talked about but misunderstood concept without glossing over things and not info dumping, thanks man
These tips are insane. Keep em coming man
Super fun and easy to comprehend for us laypeople. ๐ง๐ปโ๐ฌ
Bro! This game is looking amazing! Your mother and I are so incredibly proud of you !
The pixel art and animation looks incredible
Your game is about to be POLISHED AF... Definitely going to buy, but not just because of how cool it's seeming so far, but equally to support you and these amazing videos you've been making. Alot of these tips I've known as a non-dev, but I'm still learning a great deal of stuff such as being able to use normal maps on pixelart, and also this doubles as a refresher for any dev that hasn't used techniques like these in a good while too. Especially helpful since I've been planning on starting my game dev journey soon just as a hobby thing. Anyways, loving these video, keep up the awesome work, and just know that you'll definitely have a guaranteed buyer when your game comes out, cuz I'm vibing with everything I've seen so far. ๐๐ฅ
pretty interesting short. but i just wanna say i gave your game a shot and it's not bad at all. seeing the difference between the graphics used in this short and in the playable is very noticable tho. would be cool to see an update for it or maybe even a full release on steam?
Normal maps in pixel art is something I really want to see more of, love the effect
Wow, I never would have imagined using a normal map for a sprite, but it makes perfect sense.
