Sort of seems like the executives at Atari were kind of wanting this to be a scam, but the engineers and designers actually really loved what they were working on.
If only there'd be some aftermarket fan add-on that would blow the warm air back into the machind, I'd totally buy this!
Pong at 5,000 FPS? I'm in.
As someone who owns a 2600 and has Pac-Man on it, that explanation was amazing! You didn’t have to include that bit but it just shows how much effort the team at GN puts into their content.
Gotta be honest it might not be everyones cup of tea but they did actually make effort with this thing, and that cant be said for most emulator boxes.
Editor's Editor's Editor's note note note: These statements were before Stadia was facing a Class action lawsuit for false claims over 4K, as it turns out a 4k video stream of cyberpunk running at 1080p is not in fact, 4k.
Thanks Gregory!
Always love the little PCB easter eggs on things like this. someone knew they would be appreciated, and someone was right
Steve and all of GN, in my opinion your the best content out there, your honest and nonbiased reviews and investigative reporting really sets the bar for other reviewers, keep up the outstanding work guys!
Seems alright. It's a nostalgia trip with some extra capability. Not a complete ripoff like such things so often are.
To the question of why people backed this on Indiegogo, I think there were two main reasons: One is the nostalgia factor that old farts like me get off on. The Atari 2600 was the first "major" console I played on as a kid, and this thing really scratches that itch. The second reason is modding and tinkering. One of the stated goals of the design team from the beginning was making a machine that people who like to mod and play around under the hood would be able to do that with. My personal reasons for backing it were some of Column A and a little of Column B.
Awesome Atari is back I can't wait to buy Atari VCS when it comes to Athens Greece
I had an Atari 800XL, and a 130XE, and even a 1040STE, but nostalgia only gets you so far. I'll keep my fond memories of Atari and of my childhood intact, thanks.
A year later and I think this isn't doing so bad, there are new releases almost every week, they are releasing on multiple platforms and this just may live on. I love mine and it has a prominent place on my gaming shelf.
Glad this actually came to light in the end, too many retro Kickstarter things have failed due to mismanagement :)
Mainly wanted this as a nice compact linux machine that came along with Atari games. Mostly because my 2600 is on its last legs and my 50+ game library is still much loved by me.
Atari's in that phase that just throws everything to a wall and hope that something sticks, identity crisis for sure but hey the VCS was a nice venture.
So the take away is it's not hot garbage. All kidding aside great review GN.
You can unlock the bios and overclock the cpu
