That was a very good description of the CAC score and the cardiac stress test. Unfortunately, Dr. Postalian did not mention the MOST DANGEROUS component of all atherosclerosis-SOFT/VULNERABLE plaque which neither a CAC score nor a stress test will pick up!:thanksdoc:
Once the medical industrial complex gets you in the testing system it will never end until they extract every dime, they can from you. This is a for-profit business you know. The CAC is a loss leader for them which is why it's so inexpensive because it leads to tests and procedures that gain them tens of thousands of dollars before you die.
mine was 45 and doctor prescribed statins, i never filled the prescription, no way will i take those. 58yo and run 5 to 6 miles every other day for the last 13 years
my calcium was 2660 I'm 76 years old, I've been running 3-5 miles a 6 days a week started in 1972. My cholesterol was always around 180 -200 I have a terrible family history. My Doctor had me take a nuclear test plus other test all good she said if don't have any symptoms, does that make sense. ps my wife had the test, 0 cal score we've been eating the same for 45 years
A CardioRisk CIMT will show both calcified and soft plaque. No need to guess
Im afraid to take the CAC test because i heard a CT scan radiation of the chest is like taking 800 chest Xrays
My husband's CAC score was 576, The test also said "Imaging findings: Dilated mid ascending aorta to 4.1 cm. Trace aortic valve leaflet calcification.." He smoked from age 17-41 (no smoking since.) His paternal uncle died of a heart attack, his father died of alcoholism in his early 60's, his mother was on Coumadin and high blood pressure meds (no history of heart attack.) He is not over-weight and eats a mostly vegetarian diet (chicken or fish about 3 times a month, bacon 4 times a year, a beef burger about once every 3 months. mostly veg's, beans, rice, pasta,) he is on 40mgs of pravastatin, he gets winded after 2-3 laps in the pool (he swims 20 minutes 2-3 times a week, does active gardening in the summer, 6'2" 188 lbs, What other tests should he have? what else should he do?
What if you have that score, all your bloodwork is good except borderline cholesterol but you've had a very healthy lifestyle diet and exercise for 30 years? My doc said there is only so much I can do.
