I understand that the engineers "washing their hands" of the consequences of the challenger debacle can be seen as deeply disturbing. The pilots lives were on the line, for one, and if the vehicle exploded on the launchpad or crashed into onlookers or a populated area, the carnage would've presumably been even greater.

However

It is absolutely possible that had the engineers whistleblown, that they could've been tried for treason. Especially with the political climate at the time - not that that has become any better, as can be seen when we take the case study of Snowden.
