You also get four CDs with Assimil and just two with Teach Yourself. The Assimil CDs are only in the target language. With Teach Yourself there is a lot of English on the CDs explaining what you should do next, etc. I like both. Assimil is more expensive but you get a thicker book and more audio for that price.
In this time of war I come here to look at an amazing human being who died too young, who did not hate any other human or culture but who was actually curious about others. RIP
I really like Assimil. However, you do need a supplement for deeper grammar. Teach Yourself is great for that. I use both at the same time, since they compliment each other. Other really good courses are the Hugo Complete (so underrated) and Colloquial. Linguaphone is good IF you get a used set cheap for $100 or less. However, at full price they aren't worth it.
Hey! Nice video, pal. The "without toil" series were just an old version of Assimil. You can compare the "without toil" and the "with ease" and you'll see the level is just the same. Some languages have more levels, as English, Spanish, French ("series perfectionement"), but not all.
I wish I'd known about this course and Teach Yourself when I started French and Mandarin a little while ago. It is so important to have good materials.
@Grunts67 Ah, ok. So two books total for each language?
Assimil is very very good. I've used it for hungarian. II used teach yourself for hungarian as well which is great but for a beginner i would also recommend assimil since they have smaller dialogues that you can handle much more quickly, working on the essential vocab and not the most complex vocab.
With assimil, if you actually stick to one lesson a day (about 20-30 minutes for the first 50 lessons, a little bit more for the last half) you make tremendous progress. It feels natural. Teach yourself is more focused on grammar. At the end it boils down to what works best for you. I think both methods are great.
You can find a lot of assimil and teach yourself courses at half price books. That means that often they are pretty cheap
I have many Assimil products I have bought over the years... and haven't really started using yet. My first acquisition was Italian, on LPs. I have also a few courses on cassettes . Then CDs came. Now Superpacks include CD and MP 3 versions but you can still buy either one separately, book included, for a slightly lower price. Now there are download methods, I bought the Russian, more adapted to computers but wit a time limit period that makes them less attractive to me that the classical methods. Assimil is a French company but the great things about the audio is that it's only in the target language. So once they write a book in another language, English, German, etc, you can use the Assimil method in that language. Latin is a special case. One version was so much hated that the public asked that the previous one should be brought back. And it was . So don't buy that previous version. Learn French and you'll get access to Assimil gold mine. I didn't have to, because it's my native language. Audio can be sold separately: THERE IS A VERY BIG PROBLEM with that. You then have to find the book whose year correspond with with the audio or vice versa. Assimil is proof that reincarnation exists. Just kidding, books get rewritten all over again so the audio is different from earlier version. Japanese and Chinese versions in two parts are older, shorter versions. The recent ones should come in one book. I even have a CD-ROM version of Chinese, to be used on Windows 98. A collector's item? And the Esperanto version (1974) has been unavailable for quite a time. An Esperanto guide is available, though, but with only one cd, and much much more limited. Something like a phrase book. Assimil has lots of these, some of them even without audio (you'll have to be satisfied with transliterations, so pronunciation only in written form.) But they also have some e-books version and, when available, you should treat yourself to the ENRICHED version where audio is also available. My Kobo couldn't support the audio version so check before buying. True levels 2 would be "Perfectionnement" courses (perfecting yourself, for instance, let's say in Arabic, etc) Assimil also offers, at least in French, material to help you learn writing with different alphabets: Russian, Japanese, etc ,the latest one being Hindi. Normaly one lesson a day is recommended with roughly 30 minutes. At that speed you should get through a course in less than half a year. Of course, since the audio is all in the target language you can get creative , like you did when you chose to combine 3 lessons. And to close my comment, I would like very people to use another product AMIKUMU. It's a free app (you pay only if you want additional options) . This app tells you how close other people using it you can speak the language of your choice with. At a theoretical possibility of more than 7500 languages (some of them sign languages) you can get to talk to people without a method published to learn their language.
that's why i recommand to both read new and old editions that would be great. they have only an advanced edition only in French version i heard that they are planning to make a new one ! i am still waiting, the text are long and full of stories and new stuff advanced ones maybe it can take you to C1 level, but you should read it a lot of time in order to obserb all the contents !! finally Assimil in my opinion is the best method if you wanna get in touch with a language !!
I know this is an older video but I thought I might weigh in here. Somebody else has probably already covered this however. I have both Italian with Ease and just purchased the without toil (1951) published in the 70's off amazon. With ease has 105 lessons while without toil has 140 lessons. The older version has much less blank space on each page as well. The content is more engaging IMO in without toil. The only problem is alot of the language is outdated and no longer in use, just good vocab.
I've been waiting for something like this from you. I can't wait to hear the whole thing! :)
Hello, Moses! I'm willing to learn Polish but I'm broke. I have already learnt some German by using Assimil, and I could actually download it, but I don't seem to be able to download Assimil for Polish. Is there any web site where I could download it? Thank you very much.
Helpful video. Are the Japanese Assimil CDs completely in target language or do they include the English translation? I really want to have only target language on the CDs I get next.
@vinayaka70 Very helpful, thanks for taking the time to explain all of that.
@jjay75 That's true. It's not too late though. Just try it out when you get a chance.
Well, for French, they have assimil "using french" which is beyond the basics, it's a kind of book to get further when you complete the first one !
That settles it, I have to get Assimil soon! This will also mean learning French because there are more Assimil courses available with French as the base language.
