How Curry Sparked a Rebellion : The 1857 Sepoy Uprising - Did you now ?
In 1857, while India was under British rule, a simple daily meal would mark the beginning of a bloody uprising. The sepoys, Indian soldiers serving in the British army, were forced to use new cartridges for their rifles. But a troubling rumor began to spread: these cartridges were coated in beef and pork fat, two animals sacred to both Hindu and Muslim beliefs. One evening, in a military camp, a group of sepoys were sharing a vegetable curry, discussing these new cartridges. The situation took a dramatic turn when they realized that to load their rifles, they had to bite the cartridges, thus coming into contact with this forbidden fat. This simple dish of curry, served with rice and bread, became the catalyst for their anger. A few days later, the first shots were fired, and the Sepoy Rebellion broke out, becoming one of the most violent uprisings against British rule. What began over a humble meal would soon shake an entire empire.
