Every year I look forward to my birthday because it reminds me of this life I’ve been blessed with. I know every single one of us have a purpose and some may still be looking for that purpose. I have found mine and that is to serve others in the honor of God. I am grateful to have the skills to treat and the ability to contribute in the health and welfare of others.
In June 2016, I am blessed to have the opportunity to join the Rockbridge Medical Team of Friends of Barnabas Foundation on a medical mission in Honduras. Words alone could not adequately describe this journey. It was an experience of overwhelming joy, difficulty, sadness, happiness, and so many emotions all at once. My heart ached every single day we visited the remote mountain villages. It was humbling to see people living in extreme poverty without access to healthcare and clean water, in homes made of cardboard, or even no home at all. This experience opened my eyes to see how much help is needed. At the same time, a heart warming experience to witness their deep appreciation for the help that we gave. We were able to see 951 patients in five short intensive days. I hope in that brief time, we touched those lives as much as they have touched ours.
This mission was physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging, but left me deeply moved with a heart that is fuller and profoundly changed. I am inspired by the Honduran’s culture, wisdom, faith, and strength despite the midst of the brokenness. What a privilege it was to have this opportunity to help and to witness humanity at its purest form.
